Sorry to jump in so late, but am I correct in assuming that the new Vibrant drivers support the P9000 Viper chip? If so could you tell me more about the improvements over running it via the (terrible) VESA driver. I know that the Viper is more a Windows accelerator card. Are there any signifigant speed differences in 3DS? Do you all find it worth the extra $$? What resolution and color depths are supported? Also, how much are these drivers, and where could I get them? Thanks JNJ

John – If you are using 3D Studio R3, then the Diamond Viper support is free! It is included in the Inline driver. You should get the 1.0.1 updated driver, which fixes some minor problems with the Diamond Viper as well as PCI support. If you are using 3D Studio R1/R2, Vibrant does sell ADI drivers which support the Diamond Viper (1-512-250-1711). The Diamond Viper is an EXTREMELY fast chip… Chuck Walbourn – Vibrant Graphics

Chuck, I have ATI MACH32 2MB vram. Render 3DS at 800×600. When I exit to dos and go to an other program that uses 800×600 the screen is garbled. This also happens if I shell from 3ds. So, the work around is to select 320×200 res and render in 3ds before exiting or shelling. Then everything is fine. If I forget, then even in windows, if I launch a DOS app same thing happens. The workaround is ok, but it would be nice to be done with this bug. I run full EISA, 32mb ram and usually run 3ds with EMM386 RAM, but can run equally well with no mem mgr. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. I have spoken with Autodesk on this and exchanges some communication with on-line help here, but nothing so far. Thanks…. oh… your drivers run fast and display is great <BG> Jeffrey

>Viper support… free! Great! I'm glad I don't have to run it under VESA. It'd be a shame to run it that way. Does it support the Materials Editor at 800×600@24bit? Or is that only 640×480 @24? Let me know where to get the updated driver, and I'll get it when I get R3. (SOON!!! :-> ) >The Diamond Viper is an EXTREMELY fast chip… I love it in Windows. I'm glad to hear it's good for 3DS as well. How does it rate to the MGA cards, and the Graphite? I know those are zippy as well. Probably slower than the MGA's.. right?

Well, we can't really talk much about which boards to buy, since we support the Graphite and we are almost done with support for the MGA, as well as the Diamond Viper. Let me just say that the Weitek P9000 is probably the fastest chip around for 256 color. We support the Materials Editor in R3 at all resolutions and color depths (except 320×200 because of the required font display area), so yes, 800x600x24bit is supported. The updated drivers are here on CompuServer in LIB 9 as VIB3DS.ZIP. Chuck Walbourn – Vibrant Graphics

Thanks for the graphics card info. I'll grab the new drivers as soon as I need them. JNJ

>> The Diamond Viper is an EXTREMELY fast chip… Chuck, The Diamond Viper is a graphics board based on the Weitek P9000 chip, which is the fast part 🙂 -Chris Panacea

Isn't that what he said, Chris? -Alan

Excuse me. The Weitek P9000 CHIP is correct. It is used by the Diamond Viper, an Orchid card, a Cardinal card, one of the Photon Torpedos, and a few other cards including the MaxVision… I didn't think the chipset police were about 🙂 Chuck Walbourn – Vibrant Graphics PS: Besides… I don't do draw-code!

YES, driver reps war! Let's move it to Take 5 before the message police take over both of you 😉 I got an idea, why not change the forum date to "1984" and left it there for eternity <g> ana /krazy images

Yes, the new drivers are for the P9000. The 3DS redraw times seem faster (haven't done tests), the 3DS 800x600x16m works fine. Windows will do 800x600x16m or 1024x768x65k. The new drivers don't cost anything but if you mean the board, I find that it's worth the money (with the new drivers).
