I was browsing thru ASOFT, testing out new Intel 14,400 modem, came across your ATARI message. I'm in Monterey, CA and a guy that used to work part-time for me (doing 3DS) just went to work for ATARI doing 3DS for them (in Milpitas, CA) for CD-ROM games. He's on a crash project, been working 14 hr days, and has a 45minute commute since he lives in Santa Cruz. They also have Silicon Graphics there, and he's learning that. I had a question for you. I'm pretty new to CD-ROM, but I have two external NEC scsi players now. What I'd like to do is store some 3DS flics on CD-ROM, send one to a buddy every now and then. What kind of a box do I need to buy to write CD-ROMs? How do you go about putting your 3DS files on CD's

Tom, There are a number of different CD-ROM recorders that are out on the market. They start at around 10k though the prices have been coming down. I don't cut enough CDs to make it worth having one in my studio. Most of my stuff is sent off on DAT tapes to others that provide this service for around $100-150 a CD. For me storage of my work is cheaper on DAT.

Yamaha has a nice CD-ROM recorder that costs $3000 OEM, and around $5000 when bought with software.

Actually, JVC offers a cd-mastering unit with software for about 4k, prices are lower than you think.

You are right. Pinnacle is also in the cheap bandwagon and I think that the Kodak PCD is not very expensive too. We are probably going to buy a recoder very soon since we are getting in the CD-ROM market. ana /krazy images

I came across the Pinnacle "Micro RCD-202" Compact Disk Recorder in a catalog called "pre-Press Direct", for $3,995 list. They are obviously a catalog that prices near retail too, so it must be quite a bit lower elsewhere. It uses "recordable CD" CDR media, but I wasn't able to figure out what the media cost. Please keep me posted on CD recorders eveyone, and thanks.

Tim – do you know how to track down the JVC CD recorder you mentioned? JVC generally does a pretty good job with their professional products (such as the -822 S-VHS deck). I'd like to get some info on the CD recorder. Thanks.

Thanks for getting back to me. I came across the Pinnacle RCD-202 recorder for $3,995 in an obviously near-retail catalog, so I think it must be available around $3,000 or under for resale. Please keep me posted regarding what you find out about CD-recorders, and I will do likewise. Meanwhile, I'd like to try one of the services you mentioned that record a tape to CD-ROM for $100>$150. Can you give me a couple of phone #'s Thanks again

There is a place in Seatle called "Platos Pocket" that we have used and "Spectrum 7" in Indianapolis, but if you check around there are probably a lot more around. Especially since from the other letters in this string seem to indicate that the prices have dropped to around the 4k range for a recorder. The media runs some where around $20 a disk I think. I would call around your area. We just moved our studio to South Florida so I am looking for one down here. Andrew
