#Swap File Question
5 messages in this thread
G- I have a question about swap files. If I have 32MB of RAM and 6MB is being
used by the program, why should my swap file be so large, ie several MB? Is
there a way that I can reduce this amount. Because of this, I must exit 3DS and
re-run it everytime use the material editor and want to render an image. I read
the manual and set the CFIG as it suggested. Have any ideas?
And to answer your question about the alpha file status. Yes, its been handled;
the facilities that I have been using want a full alpha-ed image. As a result,
I still need to go into QFX and create the alpha file over the entire image so
they can use it. The image that I sent you called NOALPHA.TGA is exactly what
3DS produced — so I don't need to send you the model. The other image
represents what the facilities want. Regardless of what Alvy says, I have to
keep my clients happy. Thanks for your help on this.
Incidently, you implied that I sent the file to the wrong location. Is that so?
If so, where and how should have I sent it?
Finally, I haven't gotten any answers on how to get a flat texture map on the
example I sent out on the forum. How can I get a flat, undistorted, texture map
on the faces inside a cube with a door cut out of it? The camera is in the
inside, and each wall has a door (a rectangular hole) to the outside. I use
face map but the map looks distorted. Gotta fix?

See pg 112-117 of the installation guide for details as to memory
usage. See pg 113 last paragraph on how to save up to 4 meg
when rendering.

If you start the machine in slave mode, does the program still allocate memory
for the shaper/lofter buffers? (you can't use them in slave mode) if so, put
it on the wishlist–

If 3DS is only using 6Mb, and you've got 32Mb of RAM, and you're STILL creating
a swap file, you've got a memory configuration snafu somewhere in your system.
Re sending files that you'd like someone to look at, the best person to send
them to is Jonas Ruikis at Autodesk.
If you want to map a texture map to a flat set of faces, the most explicit way
to do it is to detach those faces into a separate object and then just
texture-map them. Works great!

Alternatively to what Gary suggested, box mapping should be worth a try.
