This might not work, but try increasing the stack. Some zipped files seem
to use a lot of stack space when being unpacked. Try a stack of 40000.

THANK YOU! I feel so dopey… checking the stack size is like checking cables
and connections when you have a hardware problem: it's one of those basic
things that everyone should do when tracking down a problem. I thought my stack
size was set at 40000; I did that a long time ago. Well, it isn't. I open a
shell and get a stack size of 4000. I figure the custom stack size must've been
lost when I upgraded my system software a year ago, and I never noticed before.
So, thanks again. I now have 14 Jpegs from my Singapore friend, ready to view.
