A minor suggestion
9 messages in this thread
I would like the next version of 3DS to include the kind or relative
coordinates that AutoCad does – you know how, once you have a point set you can
place the next a, for instance, @20,10 which puts the new point at a
coordinate that is 20 more than the last point's X coordinate and 10 more than
its Y.
Life would be simpler…

Chris,
<< …relative coords wish >>
got it.

Jonas,
I tried any combination of keys I could think of to move from keyframe to
keyframe, (say, for jumping from keyframe to keyframe while in camera view);
the <ctrl><arrow> and <alt><arrow> you suggested on the telephone didn't work.
Did you remember the combination yet? If it *isn't* there, would you add it to
the list?
Thanks,
John (A/E/C Technologies)

'Guess I need to hit the books more; I was looking under "hot keys", but this
is just the ticket.
Thanks.
John
Jonas: Thanks. I end up building a lot of models from plans, and I run into
times that just scream for relative coordinate input.

A silly nonsense wish, why don't let people remake the 3ds interface
at their tastes? That include custom menus, custom floating palettes,
etc. Hey! You even can include motif-like look (ops, I forget that R4
will be for NT and AXP platform, right? –hehe, nice try, uhn?)
Seriously, the custom thing seems logical to me. And now, some krazy
stuff:
Why not a system in which you can save objects alone with all mapping
information and save them to an object format that can be included in
a database that can be called from a floating palette that includes
rendered thumbnails of that objects and that will let you take one
and drop it in the scene? (uf, excuse my english-like explanation,
but I'm sure that you will get the idea). Something like Painter. The
same could be done with lighting information (don't ask me how 🙂 and
many other things. This would speed up things a little. I will be
back with even more impossible stuff soon 🙂
Ana,
<< nice try.. and some wishes>>
got 'em.

I don't think your wish is all that silly. I'm used to customizing my
CADD software as you suggest. I like the idea of remaking the
interface to suit one's wishes. Personally, I'd prefer a
customizable menu system with the ability to create macros and a full
command line for keyboard entry. I want the keyboard entry for the
precise movement of objects/faces/vertices/lights/cameras etc. On
one of my customized menus I'd incorporate your idea of having a
palette of 3ds files ready for placing. The last thing I'd do,
however, is emulate the $%^&%^$%$ motif interface! Actually, the
only thing I despise about motif is the dual dialog box. Cutting and
pasting and just keyboard entry in general gets screwed up by that
dialog box.
Please help me out on a software evaluation. (Anyone else out there
please chime in) If you have used RIO could you tell me how it
stacks up to windows based image composition programs like Altamira's
Composer.
