Apparently Strata Inc. has just released version 6.5 of Strata 3D / Strata Studio Pro for the PC platform and is offering an "early-bird" price around 1/3 of 3DStudio's. Does anyone know how Strata measures up ? – as good as ? – better than ? – okay, probably worth the money ? – forget it, save up and buy 3DStudio ?

Yep, I've played with a LOT of 3D modeling and rendering programs, and by far Stratavision 6.5 is the WORST I have seen. The user interface is something out of the dark ages. It feels more like an interactive batch file than a program that someone is actually trying to sell. Strata's archaic version of the keyframer (half a horrible try at a GUI, half Lotus for DOS 1.0) is something to commit suicide over. The rendering times ain't bad, but there's not much you can render that'll look any good. I am not coming at this from the standpoint of a die-hard 3DS fiend, in fact because of the low price I tried Stratavision first, but there really is nothing redeeming about it compared to 3DS. I actually got pretty good at modeling and keyframing in Strata, and I still say that I got more done in 3DS in the first half-hour than I did after three months of stabbing myself with Strata. -MF
