#S3 928 PCI problems
6 messages in this thread
Brian,
I'm configuring 3DS3 in a new DECpc XL 560 with the S3 86C928 PCI video card,
1MB.
I've dowloaded the new Vibrant drivers for 3DS3. It improves the supplied
version, now I can use internal drivers for main and materials display. But the
true color modes are still giving me errors.
More exactly:
S3 928
800×600 65Kcolor AT&T OK!
640×480 Truecolor AT&T Error 1300: -VGA hardware checks failed
800×600 65Kcolor BT Error 1601: -there is no S3 here
640×480 Truecolor BT " " " " " " "
Any other low-color mode works OK.
But I'm a new user, it's probably something I've missed, again.
Ignacio.
Gus Grubba has that exact machine and uses the new Vibrant drivers
with them. Give him a shout.
Not really. I got the XL with the Viper, not the S3. I saw his message
but as I know nothing about this S3 board I said nothing. OTOH, there
must be something else going on as the Vibrant drivers support all of
the S3 chips quite nicely.
Ooops. I forgot that you had the Viper. But good point… the Vibrant
drivers provide excellent support for the S3 chips.

Any description of the brand of video card?
The most common problem with supporting cards like another S3 is BIOS
changes that are specific to the vendor. The S3 code generally works
the same, but some cards need slightly different code. If we can
find out what vendor made your card, and we can get one, we can add
support for it.

Chuck,
I'm afraid I can't give you much more information, as the card came installed
from factory. All the documentation I have is printed by Digital, and it's not
very technical, actually, just an user guide.

This is all I gan give you. Maybe you can ask DEC for more details about the
S3 responding to the DEC model reference.
Thank you!
