#MagicMenu HEELLLPP!

Big question here people…
In the last 6 months I have grown very dependant on MagicMenu. To the
point that when it isn't running, I have trouble selecting items from
pulldown menus because they disappear too quickly. Anyway, a few days ago
MagicMenu stopped working on my machine. Assuming the program was somehow
corrupted, I downloaded the same version from CI$ and tried running it
again. Still no go. OK, maybe a .library file was messed up somehow.
So, I tried rebooting with my workbench floppy disk. Still I can't get
MagicMenu to run.
Now for the strange part, MagicMenu shows up as a task, therefore it is
resident in memory, but for some reason it isn't patching my intuition
pulldown menus. I've never changed any of the tooltypes and they are still
setup as they were before when it worked OK.
Now the questions: Has anyone else had this happen? What type of
occurances could cause something like this to happen? Could a hardware
problem cause something like this (ie chips)? Is there anyway that the
ROM could become currupt? How about battmem bits? How about a big sledge
hammer into the side of my computer?
Any thoughts will be appreciated (even if they are off the wall). I'm
completely at a loss on this one!
FINAL NOTE: Everything else *APPEARS* to work fine.

Yes, FinalCopy II and DSS8+. However, MagicMenu is a lone program
that doesn't add libraries or devices. You simply drop the program
into the WBStartup directory and it runs. Using the same thought
process (one of the programs had altered or changed some files) I
tried booting from a virgin Workbench disk…still no go.
I've just noticed that MagicMenu IS working on my DirectoryOpus
screen. However, Workbench and any other program doesn't recognize
it. This has got me completely perplexed.

Alan,
The answer probably lies in the programs you are running in your
User-startup and WBStartup drawer.
If another program patches the same OS libraries and calls as the ones
MagicMenu does, then it can effectively "wipe out" MagicMenu even when
Exchange says it is still running.
Try removing your WBStartup programs out of WBStartup sequentially and
reboot each time. Eventually ( hopefully ) MagicMenu will start working
again and you will have found the conflicting program.
Once you know which program(s) conflict with MagicMenu you can alter the
CX_PRIORITY tooltype so that they run before MagicMenu at boot up.
I noticed this problem when I ran Arq AFTER MagicMenu. Arq BEFORE
MagicMenu is O.K.

sorry to step in your MagicMenu-discussion but…
you are working with Arq. Which is your configuration? I ask this because
it is impossible for me to run Arq without crashes every time when Arq is
called. My configuration:
A 4000
16 MB RAM
Scan-Doubler
EGS-28/24-Spectrum 2MB

Booting into a 64 colour workbench in DBLPAL:Hires No Flicker
Displayed on a C= 1960 monitor ( not a good monitor but it displays all
modes and is cheap ).

Nothing in my WBStartup directory has changed. MagicMenu ran
flawlessly for about 6 months…then poof, no workie! I assumed it
was something conflicting with MagicMenu so I rebooted with a virgin
Workbench disk (ie nothing in WBStartup or UserStartup), but, again,
nothing. I have noticed that MagicMenu is a resident task and,
indeed, it is running while on my DirectoryOpus screen. Arq runs
fine on my system. As does LacePointer, Various Virus Checkers,
TrashMaster, etc. I'm kinda' confused how MagicMenu will work on one
screen and no others. Especially since it worked fine for so long
with no problems. Even if something has changed in my WorkBench
files, a new virgin WorkBench disk should have fixed the problem, but
NOOOOOOOOO!
I'm really not sure where to turn. The program doesn't GURU or give any error
messages either. It just runs and wanders off into its own little world
somewhere.

Has MagicMenu's preferences file been corrupted ?
Have you tried deleting MagicMenu and re-installing ?

To the best of my knowledge, MagicMenu's preferences are saved as
ToolTypes in its icon. Everything appears normal and, in fact, the
program does actually run with the proper settings. The problem is that
it only seems to be working on my DirectoryOpus screen only.

Several times with no luck.

My version is MagicMenu_68000 1.27 01.08.93
HHMMMMMMM……
That is the most current release on CI$.
Maybe I can find a more rescent version.

Alan: Is MagicMenu shareware? If so, do you have the shareware version or
the registered version? Could be the author put in something sneaky like
keeping track of how long you have used this program without paying the
shareware, and then poof!! 8^)

The author states that it is not Public Domain, but it must be distributed
with all inclusive files intact. I can't find anywhere that says to send
contributions to the author, however.
As far as a sneaky tracking device, I don't think it would be a factor if
I re-booted with a new workbench disk and ran a newly downloaded copy of
MagicMenu.
The strange thing about the whole situation is that it worked on
everything in the past and now it only works on my DirectoryOpus screen.
All of the system monitoring programs show it (MagicMenu) as a resident
task, but for some reason it no longer patches my workbench intuition
menus. The libraries that it is supposed to patch are located in ROM so I
can't figure out what could be causing the problem. The MagicMenu program
itself is all inclusive (ie no other files are required).
The thing that bothers me more than not being able to run MagicMenu is WHY
doesn't it run and what other programs may be effected.

Alan,
I've been using MagicMenu for a short time now and find it indispensible! When
I use the MAC I find myself trying to access the menus anywhere on the screen
like Mi Amiga. So far it has been working just fine. I hope you get it working
again soon and I sure hope it doesn't have some built-in time/date/counter
expiration code in it. I had a program on the MAC that had exactly that, after
a certain date the thing stopped working. It expanded the monitor display to
overscan for certain monitors. No where in the Doc files did it mention
anything about an expiration date. Lots of people in the mac forums were upset
and the threads on the subject were extensive.
But for right now, MagicMenu works fine for me.

I'm green with envy! I've got a trackball and I just can't seem to get to
the normal pull down menu items fast enough! :^(
So far I've ripped, stripped and reconfigured everything. I've reloaded
the entire 2.1 workbench files (at the expense of losing updated patches
and libraries). Still no go! I've deleted the old MagicMenu and
downloaded a new one, but still nada! I added DSS8+ and FinalCopy to my
system recently, but even they worked under MagicMenu. Therefore, I'm
fairly certain they weren't the cause.
I honestly don't believe that MagicMenu has a time tracker in it. But
quite honestly, I am completely perplexed as to where to start
investigating.
Perhaps I should move this thread over to the AmigaTech forum for the
techi-heads to thrash around.

OK, Now to add to the mystery… Today, I was using a homebudget program.
MagicMenu again wasn't working, but this time about 30 minutes into using the
program, POOF, the MagicMenu menus suddenly appear. I was repeating the same
tasks that I had been doing for the previous 30 minutes, but this time
something kicked the menus in. I saved what I was doing and exited the program
to see of this was all a dream or if everything was back to normal. Sure
enough, MagicMenu was working on every screen I opened. I'm a happy camper
now, right? NOTTTT!!!!
I got up after about 20 minutes of playing with my long lost pop-up menus and
went to the kitchen to tell my wife the wonderful news. When I returned,
everything had gone sour again. MagicMenu just went bye-bye again and all I
did was leave the computer. I didn't run anything new, change configurations
or anything. Just POOF gone just as mysteriously as it appeared.
Certainly someone out there can figure this darn thing out! I just doesn't
make sense. I would consider a virus if I wasn't running the newest checker,
but I don't believe it is.

I've also used MagicMenu for a rather long while and don't think it'd be a
time tracker situation.
Unfortunately, I can't offer any advice on your problem.
