3DS Wishlist

Here are some items I'd like to see added to 3D Studio r4.
1. An option added to the Archive function which whold include any bitmaps
listed in the Video Post Box. This would be especially helpful for setting
up network rendering.
2. Additional Editing capabilities in the Video Post Box. The abbility to
select multiple entries for editing, say for changing the name of three
consectutive bitmaps at one time, or the ability to edit the number of
frames of one entry, and "pushing" all following entries by the same
number of frames, so that evey following entry does not have to be
individually editied.
3. Support for the .RLE file formats in all areas of the package.
Thanks, for the time. How about some feedback on the value of these
suggestions.
-Scott,
Scott,
I'm not responding to you, but adding to what you have said. On the archive
question, I would like to see the following…
– Allow me to specify a MAP PATH that contains the standard maps so that they
can be EXCLUDED from an archive. Thus, the "stock" maps would not be included
in every archive!
2 Cents Please,
Chuck
That's an excellant addition. -Scott

Jonas,
Tell your people to put aside all the other wishlist items until they complete
my item — which is more important.
We need to be able to snap rotate ojects in
increments of less than one. (Tenths or
hundreds of a degree.)
Forget ray-tracing and all that other artsy-fartsy stuff.

Gee, with such a diplomatically worded request as that, I can't
imagine why they don't just jump up to do you bidding right away.
Tim,
I don't get it. Why _wouldn't_ they "just jump up and do my bidding
right away" ? (I do think Jonas understood my feeble attempt at
humorous sarcasm.)
I wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic, or if your attitude was serious.
>>most important wish…
I suspect that Adesk is so grateful for the hundreds of copies of 3DS
you've helped them sell, that Carol herself is on a hunger strike at
this very moment, chained outside of Yost's place to his car until
this very serious matter is settled.
"Carol Bartz herself is on a hunger strike this very moment chained
outside of Yost's place . . ." Yeah, I heard about that too. I'm just
not sure if its in response to my wishlist request or if its just
another part of Carol and and Gary's on-going B&D thing.
Alec,
<< forget about the rest of 'em wish..>>
got it.

All Right Alec!! Anal-retentives of the world unite! Include the
same control for scaling, add better keyboard support, more flexible
coorinate entry, and object snaps and all of us engineering type,
gotta be precise, hit the nail on the head people would be happy
forever! <G> Or at least until the next wishlist submission. All
kidding aside, I cast a vote to make your suggestion a high priority.

padding the pollbox with votes doesn't cut it. <g> 🙂

Jonas,

You mean that a wishlist item supported by 5,000 users stands the
same chance of being implemented a something desired by only one?
Besides, I'm from near Chicago and we believe in voting often during
every election. (How do you think Rosty managed to hold his office?)
Wishlist items from my dead relatives will be posted soon.
Steven,
Glad to find a like-minded-person around here.
Maybe we should start a Precision Users Group (PUG) !
Thanks for your message.
Alec Jason
Alec,
Include me in the membership drive for PUG…..
Yup, we definitely need better coordinate control in all areas of 3D
Studio; from Shaper to Keyframer.
What I'd like to see is mixed control of cursor and keyboard entry.
For example, placing circle in the SHAPER, I'd like to simply point
at the center for the circle, but key in the value for radius. Or
draw a line by picking a few points, then specify some coordinate
locations (relative or absolute), then go back to picking a few
points, etc.
To create a box in the EDITOR, just pick the first corner, then allow
keyboard entry for width, depth and height.
And vertex snapping….well, that'd be a delight!!
Oh, and something else….how 'bout being able to select a FACE by
selecting its edge, not having to pick it at a vertex?
And when using the "outline" function in the SHAPER, it would be nice
to be able to use the SHIFT key to clone the original shape, similar
to move, rotate, etc.
Anyway, gotta go. I'll have more later…

Great ideas, Jeff!
Your suggestion for key entry data on making a box is really good.
Let's keep at 'em.
Alec Jason
Mixed data entry should not be limited only to creation of boxes, but
should be applied to all aspects of object creation and manipulation.
Even functions like move, rotate, mirror, etc. should allow for entry
of coordinate values so that users can maintain accuracy via the
keyboard. Especially if object snaps are not going to be feasible
<g>.
I do a lot of mechanical simulations and it sure would be helpful to
be able to locate an object's "pivot" point in the keyframer by
specifying coordinates via keyboard, instead of repeatedly "stabbing"
at the object with the mouse until the pivot point looks close
enough. The only question about this case is "where should the
origin of the object be located for reference of the coordinates
being entered?"….at its centroid, as in the "center" object pivot
command.
I can see a few problems with working from the centroid "assumption"
as a reference point. Perhaps a couple of extra "auto" positioning
methods are required such as -X, +X, -Y, +Y, -Z, +Z and combinations
of these to allow the user to choose for example the extreme -X of
the object, the extreme +Z of the object and the Mid Y (centroid Y)
of the object. Does this make sense?
Anyway, a few more ramblings from a machinist turned artist….<G>

Jeff,
Excellent ideas!
We really need this stuff — and its actually suprising that these features are
not already built in to 3DS.
Thanks,
Alec Jason
P.S. And thanks to the efficient, eagle-eyed Jonas for spotting your message
and for putting it where it belongs: Top Of The List!
