3D Studio for PowerPC

I am in the market for a new computer system and am quite overwhelm by the choices (PC, Mac, PowerPC, workstation, etc.). In particular, I want to use this system to run 3D modeling and animation software. I have read some articles about the PowerPC and that it is well suited for graphic intensive applications. However, the main advantage comes when running programs specifically written for the PowerPC. Does anyone have information as to whether Autodesk has plans to release a PowerPC version of 3D Studio? Will there be any performance gain in running 3D Studio under the PowerPC versus a 486 PC?

As Autodesk has a policy of not speaking about future plans for it's software, you'll get no specific answers from them regarding these issues. You can, however, analyze the history of Adesk products and get a pretty good feel for what's coming up, even if it's speculation. When you consider 3DS's price/performance ratio, and the dedication behind bringing the program along in the three releases to date, there is really no other choice for serious production work on an affordable platform. These things said, I would suggest an upgradable (AXP socket) pentium/PCI machine running 3DS and your favorite non-3D graphic software as a fair bet for a system that'll keep you competitive in the industry. -Alan Iglesias

Alan, I going to buy a PC just for 3D-Studio. My 386/25 4MB RAM just isn't cutting it anymore. I am going to get a PowerPC from work to do the Image editing and such and am going to network the two. What you you consider the minumum PC setup to get quick 3D-Studio Operation? This Machine will be dedicated to 3D-Studio Operation Only. –Steven Walters
