Does the Bank of Scotland offer their HOBS system to personal account
holders as well as business users? I'm changing my bank account at the
moment, and this facility would be VERY useful!

Yes, Bank of Scotland does supply a HOBS to personal customers, however
the system is VIEWDATA based and you would need an AMIGA VIEWDATA
supporting comms program to use it.
I notice you use the MICROBOTICS 1230XA? Have you had any problems getting
it to work? I lose nearly a meg of chipram on it.
Apologies for being so long in replying – I was down in England for a few
days and only came back up to Scotland tonight.
If you come acrosee a VIEWDATA program for the AMIGA, I'd appreciate your
letting me know about it.

I've got the GVP A1230 Turbo+ II, not the Microsbotics 1230XA, I loose
about 200K of chipram but thats without re-mapping Kickstart to RAM which
gives you a great increase in speed. When I get another 4Mb SIMM, I'll
map it to gain the speed…
I'm aware that HOBS needs a viewdata system, but similar to you, I don't
know of one.

Yeah, it's made quite a difference. I should be getting the extra 4Mb
within the next week or so and mapping kickstart into it, then it'll
*really* fly!
BTW, what system are you running Trent? (probably an A4000 I should
imagine, most of you over there are!)

Nope, just an A1200 (do have a 4000/030 tucked away somewhere nice and
warm<g>) non-accelerated with a GVP SCSI/RAM+ Series II board with a 68882
FPU on-board. A 80mb and 240mb HD. A Chinom CD535 CD-ROM. Nothing much
really<G>.

Nothing much really eh?! I'd give 'nothing much' for your 240Mb HD and
CD-ROM. BTW, what do you use the CD-ROM for? I'm planning on getting one
later this year (yeah along with all the other stuff I can't really afford
but will still buy anyway <g>). I plan to use it for, um, err, I don't
really know… …oh yes, playing with PhotoCD images in ImageFX, getting
loadsa sharware (fred fish disks etc) and just to say that I've got one!

Well, I could give you the party line.. It is to ensure that all past,
present and future developed programs in the CD format are aloud equal
access for interaction upon my platform. (should have been a
politician<BG>) What it is really doing is taking up space and power<g>.
Bought it so I could access various CD discs I was sure that were going to
be released (I'm still waiting). Have no real use for gfx programs as I
have to desire to use them. Fred fish discs will be one of my next
acquisitions (I'm waiting for the new releases), then I will really be
able to use the drive <G>. I would suggest to you that you budget into
your system speakers. IBM/clones have plug-in speakers for their
soundboards. I picked up a set, and wow!! do they ever improve the sound
quality (and quantity – real loud!!!) with no distortion.. A big
improvement over the speakers on the 1084S..

Sounds as though you have as little justification for the CD-ROM as I do
(or don't as the may be <g>). Fred fish disks are about the only things I
can think of that _really_ are useful. The rest are only things that
would be inmpressive to have, but not very useful for me.
As for the speakers, I've already got my Amiga plugged into my stereo
system so I know what you mean about the sound! In fact you could
probably answer a question here. At work I've got Macs (as well as PC's)
with CD-ROM drives, and the software with them includes an audio player.
Now this alone is not that amazing, however, if you type all the details
of the CD you're playing into the software and choose save (you don't give
it a filename), the next time you put the CD in the drive, it
automatically knows which CD it is (I guess it makes a note of the number
of tracks and length etc when you save and compares all stored details to
that ofthe CD in the drive to find a match). Does the Amiga audio player
you are using do the same?

I use ASIM CDFS v2.0 and it has a program that allows the cataloging of
CD (music) discs. Matter of fact I have done a number of catalogs of the
discs that I do own (and like yours I had to type in the song names
manually). It is just that with the CD-ROM I have I cannot play them (it
does read them tho – the Chinon CD535 is XA-compliant not XA-ready [looks
like I have to sell the one I have and get a new one<BG>]) With this same
program it also has the capability of starting songs from in the middle,
or playing segments of the song. The actual operation of the CD is
controlled from the same screen as that which shows what songs are on the
CD..

I just saw a program in AmigaUser tonight which gives this ability also,
it might be worth having a look to see if it's any better…
Still, if it's not broken, don't fix it <VBG> 😉
