#big open plan models

Jonas,
I'm doing one of my first arch interiors and I've run into a problem that
I wanted to ask you about.
1. The interior space dxf file although large took a long time to get into
the 3d editor. when it finally arrived it was missing faces here and there,
hey, no prob I just modeled some replacement parts. All is now in beautiful
living color!
Now for the problem…….!
This is an open plan interior that has maybe 30 work stations all
specified to be a certain mfg such as Steelcase. Well, I got a work station
file from the
furniture mfg for 2 STATIONS (desks, shelving etc) it was a zipped dwg.
I unzipped it converted it to dxf then brought it up in the dialog box in
editor "dxf" load and clicked ok. Well I left and came back over the next
several hours finally leaving it over nite (expecting to find the China Syndrom
by morning)
It finally loaded and displayed 2 stations but my cursor would vanish when
I
moved it etc.
What is wrong here? The same file in acad can be manipulated and cloned
but here I can't even get it to load. this file is approx 2mb, 183 materials
loaded
and over 2500 objects loaded! Does acad simply use one aspect of the info
in this mfg file? Why so many objects used? Couldn't the mfg have modeled
these using a managable # of objects? I really want to be able to use this
kind of premade model file because it reflects the product that the client is
actually purchasing. Thanks, all info appreciated, Gary
It sounds like you brought that file in by entity, instead of by layer or
color. Hence, you got zillions of little parts. Try bringing it in by layer
or color.

Thanks, that was it. There goes the exotic explanation I had set aside. .. by
either layer or color the file pops right up! Gary
That's usually the case with importing large cad models. There are so many
zillions of entities that it's useless too do it that way.

Gary,
<< It finally loaded and displayed 2 stations but my cursor would vanish

very strange..
<< ACAD to 3DS problems.. >>
In the index of the 3ds reference manual under ".dxf" there are a
number of references.. loading, merging and tips.. Are your DXF
files created according to those guidelines?
<< faces seem to be missing.. >>
Common when importing ACAD generated data. You must create the
objects in a CCW order for all of the faces to show up. You can force
the renderer to render 2-sided or you can use the 3DS
editor-surface-normals[faceflip|element flip|object flip|object unify]
pg. 7-134,135 to correct the areas in question.

Is it not Clockwise, Sir?
You are correct. It IS Clockwise. I've seen several people switch this
around, and I was sure it was CCW myself. I just tested it again. I was
wrong. CW it is!
