In the index of the 3ds reference manual under ".dxf" there are a
number of references.. loading, merging and tips.. Are your DXF
files created according to those guidelines?

Common when importing ACAD generated data. You must create the
objects in a CCW order for all of the faces to show up. You can force
the renderer to render 2-sided or you can use the 3DS
editor-surface-normals[faceflip|element flip|object flip|object unify]
pg. 7-134,135 to correct the areas in question.
