I believe the SMPTE recording is planned for the 4.0 release, and the GPI
trigger should be in the Control folder with 4.0 also.
The CG is working, but as you may have noticed, keys, crawls and scrolls
aren't.
I also expect NewTek to complete the manual with an index as soon as 4.0,
and all the programs, are finished.
4.0 will also have the ability to do unlimited lossless D2 layered video
by using the "Main Output" as input to record Flyer clips. At present, you
can set the Switcher screen to DV1 or DV2 and record framestores to a
Flyer video clip. You can even do a cut or dissolve to the other buffer
during recording. Speed up framestore processing considerably.
We may see many VTASC related utilities at NAB in April. I'm sure when
NewTek had its developers' conference, the technology was released also.

surpise. The reason I say this is becuase early on after the Flyer
announcement I asked NT about this very operation. They said that the Flyer
could not play and capture video at the same time. So the compositing operation
as I understood it would require output to tape and recapture for each 2 layers
of composite desired. Sounds like from what you said (unless I'm reading more
into it than intended) that by playing the flyer 'closed loop" I never have to
take the video outside of the FLyer domain until I've finished all n layers of
composite.
Re: the index – I'm picky. I don't consider any of those keyword lists that
have randomly appeared at the end of Toaster documents as a true index by any
stretch of the imagination… As a matter of fact, thought they keep improving,
I don't consider the manuals are real manuals either. More like collected crib
sheets.

Wayne, The Flyer is not really "playing" the framestores, so this doesn't
count. You CAN cut or dissolve between Toaster input 1 & 2, but this sin't

I very much agree with you that the capacity to use lossless layering would
significantly enhance the flyer. I also understand that the current version
does not support it. I have thrown out some "crazy" ideas in the past as to
how this might be done – and I sure would like to hear from NEWTEK where this
fits on their priority list. One option would be to stick another flyer into
the system and be able to go back and forth between the flyers. Minimal hard
drive space would be required as people would generally just be working in
small segments. With the right interface and utilization of Hollywood style
front ends and lightwave – and with some super programming of both canned
effects and capacity for special effects, one should be able to duplicate the
quality and layering in expensive systems – albeit waiting for rendering time
rather than real-time. Of course, it would be better to be able to do it using
just one flyer board.

They could really improve on the INDEX function, and prepare better
manuals. Maybe when 4.0 is running, we'll get a better manual *:v), and
then . . . .
I've verified the layering ability twice, and I must admit it sounds too
good to be true. I'll keep reviewing it will Tech Support, and see if
they back off as deliver day approaches.

you sent me a quote on the drives a while back, but I could use a "refresh"
with enclosure and cables. The dealer I'm workign with has a good deal on the
7 bay drive cases, but they just don't seem to be able to sort out the cable
and cert/compat drive issue…
BTW, something else that is not clear to me from the manual. They say that you
set the in/out points for the clip you want to RECORD. Since there is no SMPTE
in, do these just not work now? Do you just "punch and crunch" the stuff in?

At present there is no plans to allow digitizing with control of the play
decks time code. The Flyer will digitize the time code from a deck and
save it with the clip for reference (in 4.0), but it offers no control
based on time code.
However, several third parties are doing applications now that do use time
code and interface with the Flyer, so we may have to wait for NAB to see
what they're working on.
With the Flyer, you record clips as you view them on the play monitor.
With 4.0's Cutting Room, you'll then be able to cut them up into clips,
separate audio as needed, create individual frame stores, and have the
Flyer clean all unused frames and reorganize the drives for maximum
storage.
