gnu help needed
4 messages in this thread
I was wondering if somebody might be able to help me. I recently downloaded
all of the gnu C, C++, and Objective C files in the Library (took me almost 2
hours!!). Anyway, I am having some probems.
First, I wrote the infamous "Hello World" program just to verify evrything
would work. Well, it didn't. I discovered that the stdio.h header file wasn't
included in the archives. I found a copy of stdio.h from an old Lattice C
compiler I have (version 3 I think) and tried compiling with that. I then got
parser errors in several lines of the stdio.h file. I edited out some spaces
on those lines (that seemed to be the common denominator in the lines that had
errors) and that now seems to work OK. I can't confirm that because the
program still does not fully compile. I now get the following error:
ld: No such file or directory for crt0.o
I believe that crt0.o is needed for compiling anything but I have confirmed
that it was not included in ANY of the 13 or so files I downloaded. I have a
c.o in my Lattice C compiler which I think serves the same function, but it
doesn't seem to work with the gnu compiler.
The documents seem to be very sparse on how to set this up initially. How and
where do I get the necessary files that I don't seem to have?
Thanks in advance for your help..

Daniel,
I think I may be able to help you. I also had some serious problems
with installing the GNU compiler. I simply used Opus to unarchive the
files and move all of the files and dirs under one directory. The
installation instructions have a lot to be desired. I found the crt0.o
file under the gnu/lib directory. I'll try to get this file to you as
soon as possible.
Also, have you been able to get the C++ compiler to work. Anytime I
try to use the ++ compiler my machine GURU's. I'm still at a lost but I'm
trying.
Hope I helped.
Deron,
thanks for your response. I actually discovered the solution to my problem
after reading of a similar problem in the AmigaUser forum. I was using LZ to
unarchive my files and thought it was working fine. I didn't get any errors
when it finished. However, I have since unarchived them with LHA and found
that this resulted in the unarchiving the missing files! All this time I
thought LZ was doing the job OK and it really wasn't.
Anyway, I have since gotten the C complier to work OK. Haven't tried the C++
yet. I'll yell if it turns out I have a problem with it.
Thanks again!

deron,
Remember me? I was having the problem the gnu compilers. Well, I think I told
you that my problem was the way I was "uncompressing" my files. After I
uncompressed them, the C compiler worked fine, but I still had problems (like
you) with C++ guru-ing. I seemed to have fixed that problem as well. What I
did was install the REXX files (in the REXX directory) per the instructions
(just print out the REXX files and read them). This almost worked. I then got
a lib error that it couldn't find libg.a in the directory. I located libg++.a
and renamed it as libg.a and now it seems to compile fine. Hope this works for
you.
Cheers!
