Is there a way to calculate how fast memory chips should be, based on CPU
speed?
I have an AdRAM board with 2M of 80 nanosecond chips which I used very
happily for over two years with my 68000, but I had to remove it when I
accelerated with a 25MHz 68030. Tried again when I went up to 33MHz, but
the results are still the same: boots OK (warm reboot very occasionally
requires double-mouse-button-and-select-drive approach), configures the
AdRAM correctly along with the 2M on my accelerator board (VXL-30), then
almost inevitably at some point in a session: crash. For example, loading
a Final Writer page with two EPS graphics on it, the system hangs
(unmoveable mouse pointer, etc.) consistently at the point of starting the
second graphic. With the AdRAM board removed, there is a brief delay at
this point, but then the second graphic is displayed and everything is OK.
My interpretation of this, is that maybe the hang-ups/crashes occur when
the system addresses the AdRAM board (if installed).
Could this be because the memory chips are too slow?
On the other hand, neither the documentation for the AdRAM or for the
VXL-30 say anything about memory speed, implying that it doesn't much
matter…
