I'm in the middle of installing a SyQuest SQ3270S cartridge drive. Everything
is working fine except when I boot up with no cart in the drive. When the SCSI
scan hits that device, it hangs with the drive light lit. I've waited a good
long time, so I don't think it will ever time out.
I assume what's happening is that the drive is alive (so it's responding) but
isn't ready, so the controller just keeps inquiring forever (I could easily be
wrong, and invite correction).
About four years ago I worked at a facility where we installed an IOMEGA
Bernoulli drive. As I recall we had a similar problem and changed the setup to
take care of it, but darned if I can remember what the change was. (Seems it
was something like setting a "NOWAIT" flag for the device driver.)
I'd appreciate whatever pointers anyone can offer.

Rick,
IF the Syquest is an external unit…simply turn it off when you boot
up. If you want to use a cartridge, then turn the drive on, put the cartridge
in and MOUNT it via the Mount command.
That works for me anyway.
