#Output to Video
12 messages in this thread
I teach at a University and have some students working with 3D Studio. I would
like to put their work on Video, but (and don't let this get out) know
absolutely nothing about it.
What type of output card do I need? Any suggested suppliers?
We are DOS users and have limited funds.
Any help and advise will be appreciated
Ray
Hi Ray,

Title: MAX/PAR/other Debate
Keys: MAX PAR VIDEO BOARD DEBATE
A PreSiggraph 94 thread debating the merits of the MAX/PAR and alternatives.
I took your advice and down loaded the MAX/PAR file.
To be honest, it is way above me at this point.
Thanks
Ray
>>university video…
There are three ways I have some experience with:
A great way is a device called the PAR which will give you 24bit color at
30fps, but it will cost $2500 or so. The quality is perfect for
industrial/technical animation.
A much worse way, but with much better quality, is to use a frame-accurate VTR
with a special controller. This is very expensive and a lot of headache.
A less expensive way is to use a VGA->NTSC converter, ranging from a Magni
board ($1700 or so?) to much less expensive external boxes with perhaps
somewhat lesser quality. These will, however, only let you record 8-bit color
at perhaps 15fps or so, but may be more than adequate for your application. I
think you can get a converter for a couple of hundred dollars, but I don't have
a specific one in mind.
Another possible solution is to find some benevolent local animator with good
equipment and a big heart to volunteer to do this for you occasionally. There
may be a user's group nearby which may provide contacts. Also many industrial
and government agencies, such as where I work, often work up partnerships with
local universities and can provide resources. Where are you located?

>>(don't let this get out)…
You don't really learn till you start to teach!
We are located in Rochester, NY. I have heard of one company in the area that
could do a video, but they can not handle my SyQuest.
I found an add in the Cadalyst (sp) magazine for a board. It is a MARS MPEG
board from Daewoo. The output is 352×240, 30 fps/352×288, 25 fps. I don't
know if this is good or bad, but the cost is right, $1200.
Do you have any feel for it?
Ray
A couple of people on this forum have purchased/evaluated the MARS. From what
I've heard, it is fine if that resolution is not a problem. Most animation for
video is done at a higher resolution (the PAR is 756×480 and video framebuffers
are usually no less than 512×486), but the lower resolution may not be
objectionable for your application. I've put 320×200 test flics to video and
they were reasonable. Since VHS tape looses so much anyway, the result was
actually better than I expected. Try to see one in action first, or at least
get a demo tape from the MARS manufacturer.
Perhaps a MARS owner will respond here.
(oops, the PAR is 752×480, not 756×480)

Ray,

Download MARSRV.TXT from the libraries; it reviews the MARS card. If you have
more questions, drop me a line; I've been playing with one for a few weeks now.

>>video output<<
Hi, I'm teaching a 3DS class at the University of Illinois at Chicago and using
a PAR for video output. It is one of the easier -high quality- video devices
to use, if you aren't too familiar with video. There is a lot of info on the
forum about this. It costs about $2700 with the 1.6GB hd.
For decent quality(vhs quality anyway), truecolor 30 frame/sec video at a more
affordable price, you might look at the MARS system. It has lower (read
cheaper) system requirements and is easy to use. The MPEG files that it works
with are compact, render quickly and play smoothly off of standard hard drives.
Unless you are running a Video production class and need the best quality
available, then I think the MARS will satisfy your students. They have
educational pricing ~$900.
When I'm not teaching, I sell 3DS and videographics systems; but I only sell
MARS in Illinois<G>.
Best of luck with your class,

Thanks for the tip. I don't need production quality at this time. Maybe in
the future after we get out feet wet.
I found an add from a company called Daewoo for a MARS, MPEG board in Cadalyst.
Is this the same thing?
The output is 352×240, 30fps. Is this full screen video?
That price of $900 is in line with my budget
Ray
>>Daewoo for a MARS
Yes, that's it.
It is full video in that it fills an NTSC monitor/television screen.
Its a question of whether you need professional quality video or just a fast,
convenient way to get truecolor animation out to tape in 'realtime'. Check the
review John Schmidt mentioned -I agree with the overall assessment.
Good luck -Paul
I did get the review and I think it will fit my requirements.
I faxed Daewoo today for a price. If it is line with my budget we are in
business.
Thanks for the help
Ray
Good Luck, I am sure you'll get good results.
