#I want 3D Studio!

Hi everybody. I am interested in getting 3D studio for my own personal
consumption. I have spent MANY hours using shareware to create FLI and FLC
files and while the results are OK, I never get that 'WOW!' effect. It's just
too hard to specify EVERY SINGLE COORDINATE (sorry, exageration alert <g>) and
get serious results. It took me four months to complete a 30 second clip and I
never could deal with the ragged edges and not-so-real textures.
Anyhow, is there ANY way I could get 3D studio for less than the price of my
Dell XPSP90 machine? I'm not interested in profit but just my own 'virtual'
satisfaction. I'm a Application Developer/Computer Consultant and spend MANY
hours developing complete business and industrial applications, but I'd really
rather be developing my own animations and games. Am I really going to be
forced into sub-standard useless-interface lousy-rendered-animation
three-months-to-get-crap aw-machine-lockup-again type development software, or
is there a way I can actually enjoy the fruits of my labor? (Sorry. Lost it
there for a minute.) Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

If you read the WantAd section of our forum daily, sometimes you'll see someone
selling a copy of 3ds. If you set your message date back 4 days, I think that
you'll find at least one advertised recently.

3D Studio will cost you about 2,500 or so. There are other programs you could
consider. But, since you are doing animations, the choices are slim!

While I do own 3DR4, I know you can get release 2 for less than $800 —
somewhere, someone sells it on a CD with AniPro and a few other goodies (quite
legitimately — the only catch being that if you want to upgrade to 3 you
either can't or it will cost you an arm and a leg).
R2 used to be the standard — it was far and away better than anything on the
market and R3 didn't change that much in concept (just in execution). I
suspect you'd be REAL happy with R2 for the kind of work you're doing (where R3
really makes a difference is in true color animations, IMHO).
The details of where to get it can be obtained from someone here, I'm sure (I
don't think it's sold by AutoDesk this way — they apparently marketed it to
some third party).
That sounds great! I really don't need all the new bells and whistles,
although they would be nice. But for a lot less, I can have my wish. Now,
anybody know who I could call to get more information? Thanks again.

Maybe Jonas or somebody else at ADesk can tell you who is selling the CD. What
about it, Jonas? How does one find out more info?
