#Traditional Cel Anim
7 messages in this thread
I am a used to using traditional tools for animating. I use translucent paper
that allows me to see 3-5 frames back in my pencil rendering. I have bought
Ani Pro 1.3 and am very happy with the painting tools. But I don't quite
understand how to do traditional cel animation, (ie. the trace feature is
confusing me and I don't see how it can be used to simulate the onion skin
effect). Can someone explain this to me?
Thanks in advance,

Look into the "next blue" function. It fills the area of the previous frame
with blue(color can be changed) to use as a pattern for the next frame. After
your done it erases all the blue images.
Animator Studio is supposed to have more traditional onion skinning when it's
released later this spring (rumor has it).

Thanks for the info on the trace feature. I am eagerly awaiting Animator
Studio as well. Although, the prelims I have seen are impressive, I think I
will have to wait for a little while to get it. I only have a 486DX 40mhz with
16 meg. Not very efficient with some of the newer windows stuff.
Thanx for your help.

Paul,
Besides the other suggestion, I find that most animators use markers to
draw on the display monitor as guides.

That's funny I was almost resorting to that. But it pained me to draw guides
on my new ($$$$$$$) 17 inch monitor. But thanks for the advice.

Kevin,
Sounds like we've gone through similar trials. I don't think I will ever
resort to drawing on my monitor though.
I too have used vellum tracing paper cels, scanned them in, and done my
ink&paint in the computer. Only I used Disney Animation Studio. It has a real
onion skin effect and is geared to work the way I learned classical animation.
I actually started to buy Animator Pro once and returned it in
dissappointment. It was more like a glorified slide show maker.
I am hoping the Animator Studio will be what I need. It is the only
turn-key system I've heard of for the IBM. One package to do the video and
audio together would be great. Now to do anything, you have to use a
hodge-podge of software to get your final product.
Maybe we can talk about our animation trials some more.
Hope to hear from you,

P.S. I heard in this forum that Animator Studio will release on March 31.
Here's hoping.
I have to thank you for reminding me about the onion skinning effect in Disney
Ani Studio. I bought the package a while ago and did a few things with but I
found the ink&paint feature very limiting. I think what I will do is draw my
character animation in Disney Ani Studio and export each frame to a *.lbm file
which I will then convert to *.gif to import into an ani pro *.cel. It's
sounds a little tedious and I won't have the pressure sensitivity drawing
capabilities in Disney Animation Studio because I'll have to have my tablet
configured to act as a mouse. I'll tell you how it goes.
Once again, thanks for the reminder.
