#SCSI control of ST506
2 messages in this thread
I'll make it easy on Ed:
Emulex makes a SCSI bussed dual ST506 drive controller, the MD01 for $395. It
has a 5 1/4" form factor (meaning that it will fit inside the case of a 5 1/4"
Winchester). Available from Kierulff, 1-800-367-7767
Western Digital makes a board that does the same thing, the WD1003A-SCS
Winchester Disk Controller, for $225. Available from Kierulff.
These folks also make ESDI/SCSI links, SASI controllers for ST506 drives, and
SCSI links to streaming tape drives. And Kierulff has all this stuff in their
86-87 Systems Product Guide.
The best of all is the Optotech SCSI optical disk drive controller at $650.
They sell a 5 1/4" 244 Mbyte drive for $3400, and an evaluation module
including software for $5000. Doesn't sound cheap.
.
The proposed standard, SCSI/PLUS, will support networking between
coprocessors much better than SCSI.
Jim, thanks! I called Kierulff and talked to Michelle. They have the
WD1003A-SCS for $194 and the WD1002-27X FOO22, which I did not get a price
for. The 27X is a 2,7 run-length-limited controller, giving 50% more disk
space than standard MFM controllers. I asked her to research Western
Digital and Emulex' offerings and call me back. Specifically asked her to
look into ERLL controllers, and also find out what drive size limitations,
if any, the controllers had. (A comment she made about the 27X made it
sound like it might only support 10, 20 & 30MB drives, which would blow it
for me…) – Bela
