I for one have to say I'm very excited over the progress of the PRep standard
work between IBM, Motorola and Apple. In case you don't know, The three
companies behind the powerPC chip are working on a common standard of hardware.
If sucessful, sometime next year we'll be able to buy a powerPC based computer
capable of running MacOS, Windows NT, (possibly Windows 95 if Microsoft
continues to give them a peak at the system) Unix, and probably OS-2. PCI
video and bus. Imagine booting up the Mac OS and running Protool, or the Media
100, or AVID, or RadiusEdit and Telecast, Then booting Windows NT and using
Lightwave, then rebooting as a Mac and Composting with After Effects, then
sending it off to a Unix Server and over the WWW. Who knows, maybe if the
hardware becomes seamless, software support is less of an issue (i.e. if
program A really works best on OS 2 the developers would focus more attention
on that platform without worrying about marketshare, because all PRep computers
would run it as long as OS 2 was installed. Maybe you wouldn't even have to
reboot.
I thought I'd post this as a dedicated Mac user!
