#missing files?
4 messages in this thread
Dean – downloaded 4.1b update yesterday. Have had no problems with original
4.1 version I bought. I am getting message "error running xxx.exe (book,
calender, or any other module I try) program or one of itws components is
missing. I have downloaded the new ctl3d file and placed a copy in both
windows and windows\system subdirectory to be on the safe side. I have
downloaded files twice and ran zip test with no errors. I tried update
installation three times and always got the message that update was successful.
Do you by any chance have a complete list of files, dates, and sizes that are
needed for complete installation. I have not used any of the earlier updates.
This is first update from my original copy of DTS. Thanks for the help.
I am completely down until I get this fixed or reinstall my original disks and
hope that it will still run. Yes I did back up data files first! Hope you can
help.
It's a great product when it runs Russell.
Russell,
Try the following. This may help.
INFORMATION ON INSTALLING THE DESKTOP SET 4.1B UPDATE
1. You must have a legally licensed copy of DeskTop Set 4.0 or higher
to install this update. Otherwise, the update program will not run.
2. The help file included with this update has been revised and is
completely up-to-date. You can find documentation on the new
features there.
3. Beta testing has shown this to be a stable program; however, it is
impossible to test every possible hardware and software
configuration. If you encounter a problem, see the section below on
Error Reporting Procedures. We will accept reports of these via E-mail at
71333,2161 or via fax at 201-909-0688. Please do not post
messages to the forum or call the tech support line. We will be
unable to help you in those two locations until the update is released
on disk (about a month after the CompuServe and America OnLine
release). We will post descriptions of problems as they are found,
and patches will be uploaded periodically to fix reported problems.
4. As always, we greatly appreciate suggestions to improve DeskTop
Set, but now it will be too late to incorporate any of those into
version 4.1b because the documentation is in production. We do
appreciate suggestions for the next version.
TO INSTALL THE 4.1B UPDATE
1. Exit all DeskTop Set applications.
2. Use the Backup utility to make a backup of your data.
3. Copy the downloaded files (updte1.exe, updte2.exe, updte3.exe, and
update.exe) onto diskettes so you have a backup copy of the install
files. These will be your program disks.
4. Create a temporary directory anywhere on your hard disk (such as
c:\41btemp). You can do this from the File Manager by using the
"File/Create Directory" command. Move the downloaded files into
this directory.
5. Go to DOS (either by exiting Windows or double-clicking on the
MS-DOS icon) and change directories to your temporary directory.
Run the four files to decompress the update files (type "updte1",
"updte2", "updte3", and "update").
6. Return to Windows and use the File Manager to see if you have
CTL3DV2.DLL already installed in your \windows or
\windows\system directory. If you don't have that file, download it
from CompuServe and place it in \windows\system.
7. Make sure that share.exe is included in your autoexec.bat file. If not,
add the line "c:\dos\share.exe" and restart your PC. The calendar
program will not run without share.exe. Note: If you are using
Windows for Workgroups 3.11, disregard this. WfW loads a
Windows equivalent of this program every time you start Windows.
8. Run install.exe from your temporary directory (you must do this from
Windows). This will bring up the Update Installation window. Click
on the "Update" button to start installing.
ERROR REPORTING PROCEDURES
This update has been tested very thoroughly. However, as with any new software
release, we expect a few problems to come up. If you do experience a problem
or error, please do the following:
1. Exit and restart Windows, then see if you can duplicate the error. If
the problem doesn't occur again, then it was probably a memory error
on your computer. This is not serious, it just means that part of your
computer's memory might have gotten scrambled. Restarting
Windows will take care of this.
2. If you can repeat the error, write down in detail the steps you are
doing just before the error occurs.
3. Make a careful note of any error message that appears.
4. Tell us the make and model of your computer and the version of
Windows you are running. If applicable, include the make and model
of your modem (for Dialer problems) and your CallerID device (for
Cal. If you are having a problem with CallerID,
please also include the CallerID initialization string for your device
and the format it sends CallerID information to your computer. You
can get this format information from the device's manual or by
monitoring your CallerID device from the Windows Terminal
program.
5. Send this information to us by E-mail at 71333,2161 (no forum
messages, please), or by fax at 201-909-0688. We will not be
equipped to handle questions or problems about the update on the
CompuServe forum or on the Tech Support phone line until disks
start shipping (about one month from the CompuServe and America
OnLine release date). A Tech Support representative will download
all E-mail at 9:00 AM and send responses that same day. Faxes will
be responded to within 24 hours.
Thank you for helping us out by following this procedure. This will ensure
that your problem is resolved as quickly as possible. the neon!

Dean – this is a copy of one of the help files I have already downloaded. I
install applications and NOS software for a living. PLEASE send me a list
of all the files needed for a complete install of 4.1b. I have the list from
your files of the compressed *.@@@ files, which I have all of them. Please give
me the size, date, and full name and location of the complete set so that I can
trouble shoot my problem. I noticed that there are others with the same
problem that I have.
I am upgrading from 4.1b and I am wondering if you guys missed a file or a
patch when you combined the 4.1b files.
I am 99% sure that with my expertise that I have not missed anything that
is documented in any of the files you guys have listed. Thanks – I
think if we can find the problem quickely we can save a lot of others the time
and effort I am spending!
Russell,
The follwoing is the list that you requested.
