Does 3D Studio rel 4.0 do raytracing on it's own, stock out of the box or not?
I've seen where some people say they raytrace with some other software. I
would think for the price it should, but I'll let the experts tell me.

No 3DS does not raytrace (except for shadows)
just 'cause it's raytraced, doesn't make it better. Especially since
scanline methods are usually much faster.
