#Rayman speed

Stefan, I understand Rayman is optimized for the Pentium. I am using a 66 MHz 486. Could you indicate about how much speed improvement can be expected with a Pentium? Thanks, Mike

Mike, I made some little benchmarks with the results I`ll explain below. I used a 486/66 VLB with 256 KB second-level cache and a Dell Omniplex Pentium/66 PCI with 256 KB cache. All machines had 32 MB RAM. The config.sys and autoexec.bat are the same on both machines. Virtual Memory Management was not used. I used three demo scenes (included in your RayMan package): alessi.3ds, cocktail.3ds, bottle.3ds. I rendered the scenes with 3DSR4 and RayMan Release 1.01. RayMan was up to 3 times faster on the Pentium than on the 486. 3DSR4 was up to 2.1 times faster on the Pentium than on the 486. This means probably that the Pentium optimization brings a clear speed advantage. Michael

Mike, three times should be the average speed gain when upgrading from a 486/66 to a Pentium with RayMan. Regards, Stefan

Stefan, I have a 486/50 with 16MB of RAM. How much of an improvement in speed do you think might be realized if I add another 16MB to make 32 MB? Jim Hawkins

If the mesh file fits into memory and no VMM is needed for the space subdivison, then more RAM will show minor improvements as only the space subdivison might be slightly better. With your special situation (143k faces) you will experience a significant increase in rendering speed with 32MB RAM, as the whole space subdivison data is now on your hard disk during rendering. In a highly reflective scene as yours this leads to a considerable amount of disk accesses. It is hard to say how much the speed increase is as it depends also on your hardware, etc.. I would estimate something like four times. Regards, Stefan
