#TAR to PC software

Hi all,
I'm in need of some software that will read a Unix Tar archive off of
an Exabyte drive and dump/unarchive to dos. I got some utilities from the Unix
forum on CIS, but I would like some advice from anyone who knows as to which is
the best (easiest utility) to use (commercail is fine). If anyone knows, please
let me know.
Also, I was wondering if Tar is the unix equivelent of Zip, or if it's
only done when going to tape? (Tar = Tape ARchive??).

I use PCTAR. works great. You have to install a device driver in CONFIG.SYS
(called ASPITAPE.SYS, as I recall) after your ASPI SCSI driver. Put PCTAR
in your path, then type PCTAR -c(reate)v(erbose) directory_you_want_to_backup
or PCTAR -x(tract)v(erbose) (directory you want to restore(optional)).

Thanks. I was having trouble with pctar because I couldn't figure out
how to tell it to read the tape drive… I didn't realize it would see it
automatically by default. Now If I could only do a directory of the tape to see
what's on it without having to read every byte of data on the thing (slow,
slow, slow… we're dealing with 2k targas).
Well, at least we're able to pull frames off the tape now. Thanks

The new WinZip ver. 5.6 does this; also Gzip and Unix Compress files. List is
$29. Ph. 800-242-4PSL. Looking at the article that mentions it, it *might* be a
WIN32s application.

Thanks, I do seem to remember seeing something on that. I use Winzip
all the time, and If I could get the new one to read Tars directly off of the
Exabyte, it would be a wonderful thing.

Similar, but tar does not compress files, just concatenates them together.
