Watch out for hardware compatibility – (what else) and international protocol variables. UK is 64 kbits/s per channel so rate adoption is needed to connect to US. The average file transfer – uncomressed – is about 1 megabyte a minute though. It is only just over a year ago that it was taking me a hour to download that through Compuserve. Let me know when you get connect and maybe we can do a few transatlantic tests. My hardware is the Datavoice PC card from SCII Telecom Paris. Very good, they have agents in US.
