#using new modem

First, I want to thank everyone who answered my questions and offered
advice a few weeks ago on the selection of a new modem. I ended up
getting the Supra 28.8 V34 model. It sounded like several people have had
good luck with them, plus I've had slower Supra's in the past. They even
have an Amiga support person!
Now I have a couple of questions about using my new modem:
1) So far, I have only used it with CIS at 14.4. I initially set the link
speed in AutoPilot to 38.4, but got errors when downloading a file. After
changing the link speed to 19.2, everything seems fine. I remember seeing
some discussion of possible problems with the built in serial port,
serial.device, and GVP accellerators. (I have a 2000 with GForce 030.) I
thought I hhad saved the messages, but couldn't find them. Could someone
please give me the scoop on these issues?
2) Where can I find/buy/download FAX software? Can anyone make any
recommendations?

If you're looking for commerical fax software, there is TrapFax and GPFax.
GPFax has been out longer for supports both Class 1 & 2 fax functions as well
as the Silent Answer mode on Supras. TrapFax is the new kid on the block and
only supports Class 2 fax/modems.

The serial.device is largely CPU driven instead of DMA driven like many of the
Amiga's other features. Increaseing the speed of the CPU helps, but you may
need to use a different serial.device.
The current serial.device has a lot of extras crammed into it to support the
printer devices on the serial port. An optizmed serial.device like
BaudBandit.device, or one of the other high speed serial devices may help.
Also, try cutting back on the multitasking (freeing more CPU time for driving
the serial & doing non-DMA HD transfers. Also, using fewer colors may help, as
it reduces the amount of time it take to update the screen.
I doubt if a slow CPU is my problem. I have a 50 MHz 030. I am only running a
4 color Workbench, and I don't have a whole lot running simultaneously. Mostly
just a few commodities. What you said about the serial.device is something to
consider. I'll have to check into that.
