#HELP GPFax won't fax out

I've recently purchased and installed GPFax (Version 2.346) and it
looks great except for one thing — I can't fax out.
Symptoms: When I try to fax out, the modem will connect to the receiving
fax machine, and then proceed through the handshaking "training at xxxx"
sequence all the way down to 2400 before saying "Training Failed (Noisy)"
and quitting. I've tried sending to three different fax machines and a
fax modem with the same result. Ironically, although I bought the
software mostly to fax out, I've had no problem with receiving faxes,
including faxes from some of the same machines I've had trouble sending
to.
Setup: Modem: Zoom faxmodem 14.4EX, Model 160 (Class 1), connected to an
Amiga 3000 running Workbench 2.04. I've tried both MODEMTYPE=144LC and
MODEMTYPE=GENERICC1, and briefly experimented with most of the other class
1 types. I started with the default initialization string and have tried
many combinations in an effort to enable the settings mentioned in
Appendix B of the manual.
The default register settings on my modem are:

My current initialization string is: AT&FE0&K4&C1&D2S7=90

adding "E0" and "&K4" to the default to ensure that command echo was
disabled and that XON/XOFF was used (although I've also experimented with
RTS/CTS); these settings still don't work, though. The
successfully-received faxes came through with both the default string and
the above one.
Other info: Following are the modem's firmware revision code (ATI3) and
the data pump model and revision code (ATI6), in case they're useful in
troubleshooting:

I had a similar problem and added an S39=20 to the init string
(different software and modem) to change the line carrier level. That worked
for me.
Again…different software and modem…but it might be worth a try.

Thanks for the response. It sounded promising but, according to the
modem manual, register S39 on my modem sets flow control options, and I
can't find one that changes line carrier level. 🙁

Within the serial settings in your Workbench drawer, ensure that RTS/CTS is
set. This is your most reliable setting. Ensure that your MNP compression is
also off (had a similar problem on my Supra 144LC that you are experiencing and
this seemed to fix it).

The GPFax manual states that most Class 1 modems use XON/XOFF, but I've
tried what you suggested. No luck, I'm afraid.

I found no direct way to turn MNP off, although I did twiddle a couple of
registers that appeared to be related, dealing with V.42 negotiation and
LAPM failure control. Again, though, no result. Maybe I should just
start trying random initialization strings! 😉

Is it? I'm afraid I'd agree with Horace only under a very restricted
set of circumstances. 😉

I suppose this is a stupid reply but. Has your outgoing document been
properly converted to a fax? As in, starting up GPFax and then outputting your
document to the printer where it is intercepted by GPFax and converted to a
fax. Also you should be able to view the Fax before sending.
The Author (Greg Perry 100351,1421) has been very helpful with a few
problems I have had.

Yup, that's exactly the way I created the outgoing document — and I
viewed it in GPFax too, just to make sure.

He has a user ID here on CompuServe? That's great! I sent email to
the address listed in the manual but haven't had a reply, so I'm not sure

I have a ZoomVFC working fine with a PC running FaxTalk Windows, which
only eliminates the modem as a likely suspect. What I selected for modem
type is "generic class 2 fax", sending and recieving at 14400, and the
init string is "AT". That's it. I just sent to novell's faxback server and
recieved a reply. Yes, I know: it isn't GpFax.

Our modems must be different — mine's a class 1 (at least,that's what
the manual says). I do envy your minimalist init string 😉

Yes, they are different now that I reread your message. My Modem is a
Supra V.34 28,800 and yours is a 14400 model you said. Sorry if I missed
that, it may explain the Class 1/Class 2 differences too.
The way I know this is by bringing up a terminal program like Terminus,
making sure the shared mode is off, and typing ATI10 at the prompt. This
lists back the features included in my modem. Feature 101 is Class 1
support, feature 104 is Class 2 supported. I show both. Try it, it may
also work with 14400 modems.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but the AT "info" commands on my
modem only go as high as ATI6. But my manual states that mine's a Class
1, and I have no reason to think they're wrong. Also, I have GPFax set
for Class 1 and have been able to receive faxes. That's the frustrating
thing; it's not that it doesn't work at all — it works in one direction,
and I have the feeling that it's *this* close to working in the other.
