Thanks for the suggestions. I came across Scion last week and had a brief look
at it. It seems very good.
At the moment I'm very much feeling my way so I don't know the strengths and
weaknesses of different systems.

I just received a note from the author of Scion regarding the inclusion of
GEDCOM. I don't know how I missed it, but Scion DOES have GEDCOM support, in
the form of Arexx scripts which are included in the archive.
