#installing programs

I don't understand what it takes to install a program on my hard drive.
I guess I have assumed that it is installed when the program is situated
as an icon on my Work or Workbench sections.
I have been working with a demo version of AmigaFax that I downloaded. The
first step says to type cd df0:AFaxDemo
cd df0:AmigaFax
Then type:Install
or Install disk:drawer
It says "the installation script will ask for the name of the disk and
drawer. It will also create the drawer if necessary and copy the software
into it"
Why would I do the above things if I already have the icon on my Work
partition of my hard drive?
There is an install-Now icon but it doesn't seem to do the entire job. Do
I need to put things in my User-Startup sequence and in my Devs and in my
Libraries. It also says to edit the FaxLib. How are these done?

You're seeing the icons on your floppy, not your HD if I read your
message correctly. Also, you say the instructions say to use the INSTALL
command…are you sure it's not the INSTALLER command? Unless there is a
command on DF0: called INSTALL, all that command will do is make your floppy
drive bootable. If there is a command called INSTALL on your floppy (in the
root directory)…then that's probably not an issue.

I'm not using my Floppy drive. I'm on my hard drive and it appears to
be installed however, when I double click the AmigaFax icon it calls for
something else to be needed.

Ok, you mentioned df0: in your message…that's the floppy. You say it
'calls for something else to be needed'…what exactly do you mean by that, are
you getting an error message? If so, what message?

I get a system request. "Please insert AFAX in any drive."

That means you're missing an assign. You need to assign afax: (note
the colon at the end) to the directory where the software is located on your
harddrive. This should be done in your user-startup script in S:
Get out your favorite text editor and add the following line to
S:user-startup
ASSIGN AFAX: DH0:stuff/afax <— put the real location here instead

I guess I didn't realize that AutoPilot allows me to send Faxes. Do I need a
separate Fax program if I have AutoPilot?

Wait a minute…I though you said you were trying to run AFAX? I know
of no fax capability in Autopilot unless it's the ability to send faxes via
email.

I am still trying to run AFAX. I just don't understand what it means to be
able to send faxes via email as opposed to whatever else there is.
I tried to put ASSIGN AFAX: DH0:STUFF/AFAX in my user startup but it doesn't
do anything for me. Then I tried typing a longer version taken from the READ-ME
file and I got in trouble with my computer because I got caught back in Dos
after a re-boot. So I don't have any ideas about where to go from here since
the directions are incomprehensible to me. Is there any other fax programs that
are easier to got going. I tried ElCheapo Fax but couldn't figure that one out
either.

The DH0:STUFF/AFAX was an EXAMPLE LINE. Unless that is really where
you have afax located!
What is the name of the drive and directory where you have installed
afax? Full path.
If you give me that information, I can give you the correct line for
assign.
On compuserve, in email, you can type the text in (just like a message
here) but then have CIS send it as if it were a fax to an outside phone number.
There is a fee for this service of course.

I'm still confused by the path in my computer. I have AFAX in my Work part
of my hard drive (HD1).
