Does there exist a OCR type program that will convert an IFF FAX file like
GPFAX creates and give as output an ascii file containing the text in the FAX
file?

Migraph's OCR software should do the trick. You would first use GPFax's
FAX==>IFF menu conversion item, then run OCR on the resulting IFF. I've done
it. You could automate this considerably with an AREXX macro.
I believe there is an OCR program available through Migraph that might do it. I
don't know if it recognizes the IFF FAXX format though.
