Anyone here got any experience with this??
I use "DQ timecoder" for machine control and they say the problem is in
Premiere. To wit:
I do not get machine control when I do audio only captures from within
the Movie Capture menu. Do you know why? Bug? I have used Premiere on the
MAC and I'm pretty sure I remeber being able to do audio only captures with
machine control.
On another issue, these are messages I left other forums. I thought I'd
inqurie here too in case you can suggest a solution:

1) I'm searching for an answer to a maximum FIXED RATE (which seems
the best indicator the system's true performance) of digitization of 90% JEPG
without frame dropout. Of course I can use "adjustable" and get no drop frames
during writes… but I think my system should handle top quality.
2) Also, on playback I consistently get substantial frame drops even
when I drop no frames during digitization. Why?
3) What does "data rate" (under Premiere's Video Format menu item) do
relative to "adjustable JEPG". If I set JEPG to adjustable, "data rate" allows
an entry… if I set that large, i.e. 800kB, I get frames dropping. "start
JEPG" seems to make no difference.

M2694ESA has an internal transfer rate of between 3 to 5 MB/sec. All things
considered you should expect minimum transfer rates between 1 to 2 MB/sec. The
primary causes for decreased access rates are due to device drivers, drive
caches on the system or controller and transmission interference on the bus.
First recommendation is to verify with another test to qualify the rates you
are getting.<<

My reply:
The solution was with Adaptec's UPGRADE.EXE (on their forum…) which
allowed me full 32 bit disk and file access under Windows. It also allowed me
to ennable the WRITE CACHE on the Fujitsu drive. Someone should let Royal
Computers (who uses this drive in their "Data Screamer" series ) know that they
are sending out computers that use your drive at about 1/8th capacity/speed…
they come configured with the Adaptec 2940W in its none upgraded state (even
though this upgrade was out well before the date I bought my "Data
(sorta)Screamer". Anyway enough complaints about Royal.
I now get "writes" of 4mg/sec+/- and reads of 5mg/sec+/- depending on
how large a cache I set under "Control Panel/Virtual" within Windows.
Now the sticky part. That should be more than enough data thru to
handle the sustained read and writes of digitizing and playing back
video/audio. Miro techs (who make the digitization boards) say 450kB/sec is
easily adequate and thier own disk speed evaluator (HDSPEED) rates the drive at
the speeds I mentioned above. Yet, I drop 10-20% of the frames when I work
with 95-100% JEPG, 30 frames/sec, 320×240. In theory I should have all I need
to get top quality with no drop frames. The computer is a P90 with a 512 write
back cache. I have run "DEFRAG" to make sure the disk is unfragmented before I
digitize. I have all other Applications closed and go straight to Premiere to
digitize so there are no conflicts. When I digitize straight to RAM there are
no frames dropped at all so its not the CPU itself.
**Could this be a problem with "thermal recalibration" that I've heard
so much about?
**Could it be that I have conflicting cache's setup (drive vs. system)?
Or a problem with the size fo the cache's I use?
**Is there some setting on the drive itself that could be changed or
ennabled??
**I use the drive as my system disk as well… could that be a problem?
I'd very much appreciate any comments and direction you could give me
regarding this as I am looking to purchase a dedicated AV drive and would use
another Fujitsu if it can handle full AV requirements.

These are good specific questions that interest me too. I sure hope some
guru answers them! I'm considering the Miro too. Would you buy it again or
perhaps ///FAST Movie Machine w/M-JPEG option?

Hi John,
I wouldn't buy the DC1tv again, though I think its a fine deal at the
price. I want better image quality and with cheaper bigger drives that can
handle the data that should be true at a price I can afford soon 9but not now.
Word is that Miro is about aout with a DC2 (60 field/sec 640×480) card but so
are quite a few others. I'm not that impressed with the chip they use for
JEPG… I'm going to wait for the reviews and learn how to use Premiere in the
mean time which is simply GREAT :>}

How about Intel's card and Premiere 4.0? Seen good remarks about this in
MULTIMEDIA forum.

There are two different JPEG chipsets from LSILogic. The DC1 (and many similar
boards) use the cheap one. It's limited to 320×240 or so with a maximum
uncompressed RGB data rate of 8 MB/sec (320x240x30fpsx24-bit=6.9 MB/sec). The
expensive LSILogic chipset will do 32 MB/sec uncompressed. This chipset is used
in the expensive boards like the the Targa 2000, and Mac VideoVision. These
boards are in the $4000-$5000 range, the Miro is $600. – Jan

This sounds to me like your playback is on the computer screen. The miro is a
unique product in that it is design for playback to NTSC, not the computer
screen. Yes, it can play to the VGA, but performance is poor. Their energy
has gone into analog output. (It's a card for low-end non-linear editing.)
As far as the Fujitsu drive, as long as it is not too old it is should perform
well beyond the capabilities of the rest of the system. There are ways to
optimize the drive (see upcoming New Media / May95) but you might look to the
other parts of the system first. BTW, this T-cal which you've heard so much
about has gotten WAY overrated. It was an issue, but it has been dealt with,
in different ways, by most all AV drive makers. It does remain, as I have said
before, as a Poster Child for the need to optimize a drive for audio/video
rather than data use.

I have the DC1tv and do look at NTSC ouput on a monitor…but have since have
found that if I increase the cache under "control panel" to huge size (8mg)
that I can smooth out playback

We experienced it very difficult to get 100% results with actual SCSI
controllers because of the poor Windows 3.11 support of most of these devices.
The best capture and playback results will be accessed with Enhanced-IDE

Alot of us Miro users are also SCSI based so I think that a well-laid
out plan for optimizing SCSI systems would enhance the loyalty of your
customers considerably. Certainly it would me.
This may not be a hard drive problem!! When I work with FIXED MJEPG
quality (which should be the best indicator of the what the system is capable
of, right??) I get the same results wether I digitize to RAM or to Hard Disk.
In both cases the maximum quality with no frame drop is 87% (I'm digitizing
from Hi-8, a Y/C signal). I have seen MACs do much better. Are Pentiums
limited??
Or, is it possible that DMA rate is too small or slow (I do not
understand this very well… llet alone how to vary it)?? Does the DC1tv have
a memory cache that can be increased?? Is this a limitation of your MJEPG
digitizing chip??
!! Is there a way to make sure that the data is passing through the PC
itself with no bottlenecks?? !!

video cards and rated Miro at the top ( I bought the card based on that).
They make recommendationsfor how to tune the capture cards.

I plan to upgrade to a 60field/sec 640×480 card as soon as I can get
reliable testimony as to the quality of the various cards. I have heard that
Miro is coming out with a DC2tv card which will have those characteristics. Is
that true? How soon? I've spoken with a few companies here in the U.S. which
are coming out with cards in May/June. Those will be best adapted for SCSI.
Will your new card be IDE based or SCSI?? To do the work I want to do I need
the size and speed of SCSI fast/wide. Micropolis seems the way to go… but I
am waiting to see. IDE seems too limited in the long run.
The Miro card is well designed but I want & need higher quality video
output (By the way, I came to PCs from the Amiga, a much loved machine, on that
platform there is VLAB MOTION, also a German Co. The output from that card is
superb! at roughly the same cost as Miro's card… it is a full 640×480 60
fields/sec).
I would very much like to clear up the quality limitation with my
machine. This seems to be an issue for Miro to address… Its hard to think
of going to an even more data intensive setup if my PC can't handle this one
currently.
I also can't believe that my system is so limited… since word from
others is that they get much higher qualtiy video out of P90s
Have you seen the Mac do much better at Motion-JPEG with a $600 card? The
popular Mac cards are MUCH more expensive (they have a much higher performance
JPEG chip). – Jan
yes your right on the difference in cost between DC1 and MAC cards…
However, I still wish the Amiga hadn't gone under, since a German company,
forgot the name, Developed VLAB MOTION with the lgood LSI chip… audio board,
video board, and all software for $1800 and the reports from friends that use
it are that the output is beautiful… Wish Adobe ahd adopted the Amiga and
included the AMiga in its software development group…. Premiere is great…
but this PC architecture is byzantine by comparison to the clarity and ease of
the AMiga OS

PMJI, but given what you say about the DC1's limitations with VGA output what
are there advantages to paying a few hundred dollars more for ///FAST Movie
Machine Pro with M-JPEG option? These are the two I'm considering for a low
end NLE setup. I also intend to use online editing for cuts only and reseve
the NLE output to short clips for special effects initially. I'll gradually
add hardware to support full NLE when I'm satisfied with performance and add
the necessary computer hardware (PCI bus with E-IDE and large fast AV IDE
drive). I'm also going to wait a couple of months to see what the NAB
announcements bring our way but I'm still very much interested in your
thoughts on these two low cost champions.

Waiting for NAB may well be prudent. They'll be announcements at NAB (and
Comdex later in April), including from both of those "low cost champions."
