#Which Card?

Yeah, another new member desperately seeking advice … I've got a fast(ish) PC with one slot left just waiting for a capture card. I simply want to plug in a Sony Hi-8 camera, with it either playing back tape or 'live' and capture stills, maybe annotating them later (in CorelDraw or Photoshop). So has anyone got a good card they'd recommend? I'm just itching to spend my cash … Thanks for helping.

Michael, I have heard recently of a product called "Snappy" that retails for $199 and is supposed to do a darn good job of capture in quite high resolutions. It is just coming to market, so I haven't seen it yet, but I think it would fit the bill for a decent price. A caveat however, I am not sure if it requires that the source to be captured is "still" or not. It might, requiring a perfect still frame when coming from tape, and a stationary video image when coming from a live source. -John

Tim, Snappy is a still frame capture device. It uses some sort of algorithm with which they claim you can capture at very hi-resolutions (circa 1500×900) or so. It is the first product from a new company called "Play" and interestingly enough the first product of "NewTek", the folks that make the Video Toaster, was a very similar device called DigiView, for the Amiga computer. (Play consists of a number or high-level, ex-NewTekies). -John

Tasty…and, for around $200, I guess the price is right, eh? Still, I can't help being more comfortable w/a motion video capture card that can give you the option of grabbing either full motion or stills…though a good one IS more expensive… Tim

Tim, re: "more comfortable with a full motion capture card" … AGREED. For the relatively small difference in price, it almost seems like a no-brainer. Now the Snappy does connect to the parallel port, which makes it considerably easier to install, and with the lower price, it probably does have its niche for DTP, slide shows, etc. -John

Well, in that case, it's definitely got its uses… Still, I'm w/you–I'll keep my capture card… Tim
