#KPT CRASH!!!!
4 messages in this thread
Hello out there in renderland
While playing around with my shiny new copy of KPT Gradient Designer, I became
a "virtual crash dummy" ( It happens to the best of us) And I just thought I
should let this select group put their collective heads together and let me
know what, if anything, I'm doing wrong.
I'm trying to make a realistic looking Compact Disk.
I created a material (using 2 .GRD textures, a GRD ref map, a GRD spec map and
each were masked by another .GRD) and assigned it to the top and bottom faces
of my CD mesh ( I assigned Chrome Pearl to the edges (( in case you care to
know)), anyway…
I rotated the mesh a bit over 30 frames in the KF and I started to render. In
my haste, I let it start at the default resolution (800 X 600). so I quickly
hit the <ESC> key to reset the res. and …. WHAMO major CRASH ( Every thing
turned bright Pink, purple and blue, it was very pretty and I could even draw
dark blue pictures with my mouse ( lucky me) The only cure is the old reboot in
the butt trick.
I just created a a simple scene with a box 3 lights and a camera, assigned the
CD mat. to the object and tried to render in the KF and hit <ESC> SAME RESULT
(oh boy… repeatable problems, thank goodness)
That's it in a nutshell ( hard nut to crack.., etc.)
If anyone has a cure or at least words of sympathy please let me know.
If you can't reproduce the prob. I'll upload the offending material ( I haven't
tried it with other .GRD materials yet but I did try it with Chrome pearl and
default, no crash ( thank god for the little things)
Thanks for your time
see ya

Hi David,
->ESC key…KPT Ipas…
When I describe these types of problems to my doctor he says, "Well, don't do
that." <g>
Seriously though, I've been playing with it for a while and haven't had that
happen except once. I think there's an instant while the ipas does it's
calculation where hitting esc can jazz it, maybe?
In any case, I'm still reeling at all the ethereal types of animations I can do
with this thing.

I have been told that 3DS has trouble when hitting the escape key, when
generating a flic with a backdrop image. If the GRD file is loaded as a
backdrop image, it could be adding to this by increasing the page time. not
sure though just a guess.

>>when generating a flic with a backdrop image…
Nice try, I've haven't heard that before and I'll give it a try, but I was able
to reproduce the problem by resetting 3DS, creating a box, assigning a material
made with .GRD files to that box, adding 1 omni light, 1 camera and rendering
the camera viewport. That's about as simple as it gets.
Also if you try to use .GRD files in LenZFX ( a natural match) you cause a
total lockup when Eyebrowse tries to load. I'm sure Aaron is working on that
one.
Thanks for the reply
