#Single Precision Math?
28 messages in this thread
Just read a review in TV Technology that was talking among other things about
how it doesn't take much for 3DS to have to start swapping to the HD. It said
because 3DS only uses single precision math. What is he talking about here. Is
this something different than any other 3D program? I think after using other
programs that 3DS is fairly quick.
Curious,
Paul
The only thing that causes 3DS to swap is when you run out of RAM.
In fact, since we use single-precision math (instead of double-precision), it
swaps HALF as often as it would with doubles.
Sounds like the person who wrote the article doesn't know what he's talking
about.

Gary,
If you will compare what appeared in print to the unedited copy I e-mailed to
you several months ago you will see that the confusion was introduced during
the editing process. I'll upload the article the way I wrote it to the forum
libraries under a filename like PNLO.TXT . I hope you really mean that the
person who EDITED the article doesn't know what (s)he is talking about. (sniff)
Bruce N. Goren
Ah ha… I didn't realize that Paul was talking about YOU! If I knew, I
would've made it clear that your work was butchered by the editor.
Thanks for uploading the actual article to the forum.

Gary,
Along the same thing that this thread is talking about, I assume you've seen
the notices in PC Mag that 3DS is one of the programs they're soliciting users'
reactions to; good and bad? The latest notice is on p.85, April 11, 1995.
Hopefully, they'll publish more enlightened responses, and maybe not even
butcher them. All you 3DS'ers out there…send PC Mag the good word! Responses
can be sent to Bill Machrone 72241,15. He's the guy handling it at PC Mag.

John,
What's especially worrisome about the PC Magazine call for letters though is
that they have targeted it for thier new "second looks" column. Since they
generally praised 3DS in the past , it seems to me they are looking for an
opportunity to print negative user reactions to the program. This would be
unecessary if thier original reviews had been more in-depth and balanced. I
wonder if a certain anon. forumite has sent in his(her?) diatribe yet
complaining about the missing spline modeler ?

So what is wrong with that? I'm yet to come across the holy-grail of computer
programs so everyone should be allowed to criticize a program that they find
lacking or otherwise. One thing you don't find in the forum is truely critical
messages against 3D Studio, not that I have any(many) personally, but I
wouldn't automatically discount their views if they had a strong basis. Why
aren't people more openly critical of 3D Studio? Is it because they are loyal
or there is a community or cult spirit in this forum? Maybe it is a bit of
both. Criticism comes in the form of wishlist items rather than blatent "Why
the hell doesn't it do this?" type of questions. Is this forum a model of a
utopian community where everyone works in harmony and without tension?
Too often people hold loyally to a piece of software or hardware(Applites) with
a bitter passion and nothing you can say or do will change their opinion. And
too often the only thing they are basing this loyalty on is their opinion
rather than hard facts.
I personally find the program to be very good but not beyond reproach.
<<I wonder if a certain anon. forumite has sent in his(her?) diatribe yet

I'm sure Gary is going to remedy that with a complete NURBS modeler in R5. Not
to mention longer object names. <g>
Maybe Gary and the gang should receive the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize? They sure
have made a way of keeping the peace here in this little section of the world.
When was the last time there was ever a good flame war in this forum. In my
short time here I've never seen one.
DaviD "Broken rose coloured glasses" GouID
Very good observations, David.
Perhaps the main reason why there isn't much negativity here on the ASOFT forum
is because I wouldn't stick around if there was. I can deal with wishlist
items and constructive comments until the cows come home, but I can't deal with
negative emotional dumping. No application program is perfect, and I can find
as many problems with 3DS as anyone else can (more, I'd bet). But that's not
what ASOFT is about.
I've made that clear here in the past when things started to get out of hand.
I suppose that that's helped to create a space in which people try to help each
other and find ways to make future versions of 3DS better. That's what ASOFT
is about.
Plus, I've got the power to move messages that I feel aren't in the spirit of
this forum into section 0, and I use that power (infrequently, but I do it).
That has contributed much to the peace within this space, I'm sure.
If people want to flame about 3DS, I recommend to them that they jack into the
internet and do it there.
– G
Could be that there is not a lot of negativity here because 3DS is
just a good product. Could be that there is little negativity
because the support offered here is top notch and nearly
instantaneous. Could be that negativity doesn't stand a chance here
because it is more than obvious that the creator of the program is
vitally interested in putting out the best quality product possible.
Could be…
– G
<<I can deal with wishlist items and constructive comments until the cows come
home, but I can't deal with negative emotional dumping.>>
And you shouldn't have to. Thanks for your response, it was the most
clear-headed, least emotional repressed, take-it-to-heart response from the
group.
BTW where is section 0? I wouldn't mind visiting the refuge heap for unwanted
messages.
DaviD "Seeking the equilibrium" GouID
Section 0 is located deep in the bowels of ASOFT… only sysops have access to
it.
(every forum has a section 0)

David,
BG<<What's especially worrisome about the PC Magazine call for letters though

DG<<<So what is wrong with that?>>>
What's wrong with that is the false impression a focus on negative comments
will leave with the readers. An impression that PC Magazines' original shallow
but positive reviewers were somehow hoodwinked or fooled into reccommending the
software. The second looks column seems to be shaping up as a gotcha feature,
and in the case of 3DS that will be unfair. But I'm waiting to read what they
print before totally condeming them <G>.
<< One thing you don't find in the forum is truely critical messages against 3D

Are we talking about the same forum ? There has been no shortage of healthy
discourse following the release of new versions. After that, things settle back
down to true focus of this section — technical support.
<<Is this forum a model of a utopian community where everyone works in harmony
and without tension?>>
It's pretty darn close.
<<Too often people hold loyally to a piece of software or hardware(Applites)
with a bitter passion and nothing you can say or do will change their opinion.
And too often the only thing they are basing this loyalty on is their opinion
rather than hard facts.>>
Are you accusing ME of that ? Anyone who has read my columns over the years,
starting with True Imaging, on to MicroCAD News and now with TV Technology
magazine, knows this is not true about me. I recently uploaded the original
text of my Pennello review as PNLO.TXT to Lib 1 . Give it a read and let me
know if you think I was too rabidly and blindly cheerleading, or if it's an in
depth, entertaining, and balanced report.
<<Maybe Gary and the gang should receive the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize? They sure
have made a way of keeping the peace here in this little section of the
world.>>
Gary has my vote.
<<When was the last time there was ever a good flame war in this forum. In my
short time here I've never seen one.>>
Emphasis I guess on *short time* , there have been several regrettable flame
wars here on the forum in the past year alone. Some have been over the 3DS
feature set, some have bordered on the personal.
Bruce N. Goren
<<What's wrong with that is the false impression a focus on negative comments
will leave with the readers.>>
You'll note that I wrote "negative comments with a strong basis" and not based
on a lack of knowledge or personal opinion. I don't agree with someone
publishing "false truths" but I do believe that negative comments that have a
basis in fact should be published. When choosing software the "full" unbiased
facts should be made known and not a select set of good responses.
<<An impression that PC Magazines' original shallow but positive reviewers were
somehow hoodwinked or fooled into reccommending the software.>>
But if someone had already bought the software they would already know that any
false comments published weren't true so they won't be hoodwinked, would they?
As for people who make their sole purchasing decision on an article from a
single magazine, well like the saying goes "fools and their money part
quickly".
<<But I'm waiting to read what they print before totally condeming them>>
Post it here when you get a copy. If it is truely false then we can all cut it
down, if not we should all be aware of it, right? I'm interested in facts
whether they be good or bad and because they may be bad doesn't mean the
Thought Police should exclude it from this forum.
<<Are you accusing ME of that ?>>
Feisty aren't we? I didn't accuse you of anything so don't take my comments
personally. I simply mentioned that often people bend and twist the facts to
suit their own personal opinions rather than the reality.
<<Emphasis I guess on *short time* , there have been several regrettable flame
wars here on the forum in the past year alone.>>
I've been around long enough to see what happened to Kevin.

David: I'll address your post only in part – The computer graphics industry is
awash in endless literature. Much of it is about almost nothing. There are not
many people prepared to write legitimate appraisals of 3-DS. For one to write
responsibly about 3-DS they would need a thorough understanding of the core
program, be comfortable in all 5 modules and have a strong basis in IPAS
functionality. There are many writers who have written articles about 3-DS
without the above knowledge, and to an experienced operator it comes across as
drivel. Now I won't go on a tirade about irresponsibility in commercial
publishing, but can tell you that I have read criticisms directed at 3-DS that
were absurd. Several times I was actually moved to call a few publications,
outraged. Where it is true that 3-DS does seem to generate a very passionate
user group that appear to really feel there is much more here than a product
being marketed, the ASOFT forum has given us all a place to solve problems and
discuss shortcomings in the program. The nature of on-line BBs can
unfortunately give highly aggressive individuals with unquenched needs to be
very very nasty an opportunity to spew flame and vapor. Thankfully, this forum
seems free of most of that, and flame and vapor is contained to their proper
IPAS applications, besides they take too long to render (I am eagerly awaiting
multithreading P6s). But don't think that there have not been some feisty
discussions. There are things about 3-DS that bend me out of shape, and I have
openly discussed them, and as a result received very interesting responses
from other users, tech support and Gary, both on open BB and through e-mail.
Frankly, consider the thought of this forum being blind a pretty good script
for an animation, but far from fact. Jeffrey (grain of truth stuck on rose
glasses)

I never said that this was heaven only that I wanted to know why there wasn't
more discourse on the negative aspects of 3D Studio. I was just sending out a
probe to everyone to see why they think this forum is so relatively free of
wars. Maybe it was too philosophical for some and too sensitive for others but
in all respects other than Gary, I got a defensive response. Just another
example of the collective support of the members of this forum.
I'll be sending the behavioural science students over to this forum next week.

Doubt it, now the question is why are you so interested in the negative?
Perhaps people get a rise or feel more powerful if they can find a flaw with
something highly regarded?
Bob
<<Doubt it, now the question is why are you so interested in the negative?>>
Because in all things there is good and bad, yin and yang and I find that you
can see the situation from all sides if you have all the information; good and
bad. BTW I'm not so focused on the negative I just want to get the full story
and not just one side.
<<Perhaps people get a rise or feel more powerful if they can find a flaw with

Sure live your life by never asking questions of the status quo and you'll be
fine. Everything will be peachy but we're not talking about a perfect world so
why shouldn't I be allowed to question and find solutions to problems?
It appears that everyone has got this false impression that I'm out to cut 3D
Studio down, which is totally wrong. I consider 3D Studio to be a very good
package, but not perfect and if someone said something negative against it with
a strong basis I wouldn't jump on their case but instead learn from it. Why is
there this tempered hostility towards me for asking such a basic question?
The loyalty to rationality factor is way too high.
As for getting a power trip from finding a fault, I prefer that Gary know about
a problem since I'm sure that he would fix it so that someone else doesn't have
to encounter the problem. When it's 4am in the morning and the deadline is
today you'll feel a lot better knowing that no unexpected bug throws a spanner
in the works. Thankfully the program is so well constructed that this rarely
happens which is a tribute to the dedication and work of the Yost Group. I feel
that the forum members contribute to the continual testing of the program and
this feedback isn't driven by ego or fame but a genuine concern that the
program be the best it can and to help others avoid the pitfalls.
There has been quite a few different interpretations to my question but for the
most part negative. But I don't really care since Gary gave me the most
unbiased response.
Does anyone have an IPAS routine to transform a mountain back into a mole-hill?

__________________________________________________________________
Personally, I would be devilishly inclined to give out completely
false information to anyone asking a question with all of the
attitude and flame of "Why the hell doesn't it do this?" I think
total flame messages are counterproductive for the person inquiring.
Over the couple of years I've been hanging here there have been a few
messages as you've described. The authors are often shown that what
they are demanding is already part of the program and often end up as
simple RTFM situations. Serious problems are given serious attention
and I guess that helps to diffuse most potentially nasty situations.
I think there isn't much negativity here because a)there IS a wishlist, b)we
all know the wishlist ranks VERY highly w/ the Yost Group, as an indicator of
the direction their user-base would like them to be heading, and c)because
through their constant presence here, their over-abundent personal support, and
their tight, fast, well thought-out code, we know that YG and Autodesk (at
least the MM division <g>) care about us and our work.
Now, check out the AutoCAD forum…. There's plenty of outright hostility, and
I can't honestly say it's all misplaced. For instance, r13 FORCES automatic
stacked fractions in dimensions, and (in the c0 release) the numerator and
denominator were FIXED at 50% of the full text height — this means that when
architects and engineers use their standard 1/8" or 3/32" text heights, they
get 1/16" or 3/64" high fraction characters — which are unreadable after
plotting and bluelining. Now, how long has Autodesk been providing drafting
tools? Did they have ANY architects or engineers beta the thing? Did they
listen to them if they did? Heck, 30 minutes after the first shipping copy was
in the hands of an end-user this stuff is apparent, but Autodesk (CAD group and
marketing) spends countless hours defending its actions instead of listening
and helping. (That said, every day, there ARE more and more Adeskers in the
forum, and the developer responsible for the stacked fraction stuff is on-line
and asking for input.)
This sort of "lack of fore-thought" is something we just don't see from YG —
on the contrary, it always seems we discover they've given 2-3 times MORE
thought to things that we've been ranting about when a new release comes out
than what we expect them to!
I think criticism is good, but it's just often hard to recognise here, 'cause
it's among people who respect one another.
Dave
It'll be interesting to see what they do…

Paul,
My editors at TV Technology made me sound like quite the idiot by scrambling
the original text. I will upload the unedited article so that anyone interested
can get a clearer idea of what I was saying.
Bruce N. Goren
Great. Some people here will definitely be interested. My main interest was
what was single precision math. Maybe it's techno stuff I shouldn't be
concerned with anyway.
Paul
Well, it's good to know it wasn't you.
DM
David,
Thanks for checking it out yourself. Unfortunately my reputation is once again
trashed. Very few people who read TV Technology will actually chance upon my
upload here in the forum (Lib-1 Pnlo.txt). Worse yet, all that time and effort
is down the toilet and I don't even have a decent clipping to show for it, to
shop around to another rag. It's getting harder and harder to convince OEM's to
lend me software for review, or find publications interested in paying me for
my work. It's been a nice run, but I think I'm closing in on the end of the
line as a technology review writer.
Bruce N. Goren
Bruce, FWIW I've always had the highest regard for your writing (bizarre
editors notwithstanding). If more software reviewers had your interest in
actually using the technology in production, software reviews would be a heck
of a lot more useful.
– G
Thanks Mr. Yost . On the one hand I'm just about ready to chuck it all. On the
other hand, I'm hoping that eventually I can cut the editorial censors in the
print world out from the loop. There ought to be a way to make a living someday
publishing myself multimedia style — electronically, complete with sound,
graphics and motion video in some kind of commercial online or intereactive
network. That kind of thing is no longer years away in the future, it's just
within reach. We'll see . . .
Bruce N. Goren
Bruce, Don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure that most of the people who read
TV Technology don't use 3DS. Hopefully. 🙂 Either way you know how you intended
it to be written as does everyone else up here so don't feel bad. That kind of
thing happens when dealing with editors sometimes. It's happened to me on two
separate occasions, not on that kind of scale, but it still hurts. Keep up the
good work.
