#Illustrator vs Corel??

Dudes and dudettes,
I recently got into the Adobe thang (g) by getting Photoshop 3. Along with it
came an offer to get Illustrator cheap. I have had
Corel4 for some time but most of it (Show/Move/Capture) is junk that doesn't
even work. Given my finite disk space I prefer
not to have every graphics program ever written on my disk (not to mention that
I can't remember them all well enough to use
any of them!).
I notice that Illustrator is pretty well integrated with Pshop, and I also
noticed that the latest version of Typestry accepts
input from Illustrator, so it's looking pretty good.
Basically, what I have used CorelDraw for in the past is making presentations
of text over a gradient background, charts, etc.
These are either printed onto transparencies using an inkjet or sent out to a
bureau for transfer to 35mm slides, depending on
what the presenter needs.
Does anyone know enough about Illustrator to tell me if it is a satisfactory
substitute for CorelDraw (I won't miss CorelPaint or
CorelChart very much but I need a vector program.). I would like to nuke Corel
completely and rely upon Pshop, Illustrator and
Painter3 (+ KPT, Typestry, Vistapro, AniPro, ACAD12, 3DS – lest anyone think
that life will be overly simple without Corel(g)). Can anyone offer an
informed opinion whether this is a good system, which duplicates the
functionality of Corel, or whether I will be
losing capability with this system?

P.S. I'm talking Windoze versions of all of the above, no Macs here!
Not only has an ugly packaging, interface, clipart and its manufacturer
organizes a contest with entries that could blow the mind of Ed Wood and Divine
together, but is the most buggier software ever this side of an Origin's game
and a ATI video driver for Windows: Corel Draw, ladies and gentlemen, what a
piece of crap! <bg>
Seriously, you are going to get a lot of pluses with Illustrator (at least in
5.5 on PowerMac, don't know what is the current Wintel version), _specially_ if
you use Photoshop and Painter 3.0. The integration of this Adobe program with
both shop and painter plus its features make it, IMHO, _way_ superior to
CorelDraw. Pity that I didn't discover earlier what the price of Illustrator
means against Corel

usand-cheesy-fonts" Draw. Either if you use Mac or Wintel, you are going to win
with Illustrator 5. Do the excellent tutorials, and you will be at full speed
in a couple of days.
What can I say? My life has changed after throwing Corel to the trash (that and
other couple things 🙂

I'm convinced to try out Illustrator – I don't have much to lose at this point
except a rather large tumor on my harddrive. If Adobe takes as
long to deliver Illustrator as they did PS3, we will both be dead by then and
the point will be moot!
Thanks for the input, I have admired some of your work, so your
recommendation carries a lot of weight!

I'm curious about Illustrator also for the same reasons. What about file
conversion part of Illustrator? Corel's is pretty handy but I sure could do w/
out the other stuff!! 3ds imports Ai files directly but Corel
will export Ai also. I imagine that the drawing tools in Ai are superior but I
don't know.
Could someone comment on the 2 programs? I'd like to hear ana's viewpoint
here too.
I am also curious about more detail – especially, I have learned that
Illustrator doesn't use Truetype fonts at all (Adobe and MS
are sort of competitors in the font arena, of course). I would also expect
that Illustrator output might be pretty much aimed at
Postscript stuff, which I am not doing at the present time. I would expect
that the next rev of Illustrator might have to run up
the white flag and use Truetype fonts, but there is an eerie silence in the
Illustrator section of the Adobe forum – I'm a teensy
bit nervous at this state – I have nuked Corel except for the actual DRAW
program, but I am hesitating on the very verge of sending
for my cheap copy of Illustrator – there's not even a press release touting the
lastest Illustrator's feature set in the Adobe section
– at least not the Windoze version.
