I haven't finished unloading it from tape yet, but I presume it is for vax unix, since it is part of GNU. I remember one file that mentioned it was specifically for VAX 4.x BSD and it would have to be modified for anything else. I'm still unloading cause it is in a format that my wicat doesn't digest too well, and it is pretty large as well. This is GNU Emacs after all, with the whole lisp programming system, it even includes a new debugger, Stallman's own version of the Unix DBX debugger just so you can debug GNUEMACS (I think there is source for dbx too, I'm pretty sure there is,) along of course with all the lisp code itself, docfiles, image files, etc, etc. It seems pretty big, about 13Meg I think. I've not used a full emacs before but from the peeks I had at the files as I unloaded them, you could spend your life inside of gnuemacs and never go out into the OS, you can read and send mail, compile programs, debug, dump a.out files, and much more, from inside gnuemacs. The docs say it compiles to about 525K of machine code on 68000 based systems, then needs lisp workspace, file buffer space, stack space,.. he recommends about 1-1.5 megs of memory, or virtual memory, to run. Maybe it could be cut down some. It all seems to be well written, commented etc, GNU seems to be coming along fine.
