Definitely a concept with some bugs in its conception. The ease of use theme
is often frustrated in AmigaBASIC, but I am quite sure it will spawn the most
powerful basic programs we have ever seen, especially when we give it 2
megabytes of memory to play with. Then we can make liberal use of the Call
statements to get to ROM and also many many basic subprograms until an
absolute minimum of programming is necessary to connect an outrageously wide
connection of building blocks, all neatly labeled and indexed. Of course, you
could also do that in C, but it wouldn't be as accessible to the general
public. I am very interested in building a large library of basic subprograms
which could easily be put together by the average computer user to create
his/her very own program with very little knowledge. Of course, that's a lot
of work away and perhaps an impossible ideal, but that's the potential I see
and the direction I would love to see it take. No other basic could approach
the power, popularity and accessibility of such a setup. That's one reason I
am so interested in building up .bmap files, to allow as many large routines
to be easily called from basic as possible, then to build up libraries of
modules for standard set-up routines for any given screen, window, memory
requirement, color combination, and so on through the gamut of program
segments which it is possible to modularize and generalize, then pass
parameters to. Right now, the embarrassment of riches tends to confuse rather
than simplify–but f enough chunks of a program could be combined from a
clearly defined set of routines, well, it would be a dream come true! Basic
isn't the fastest or even the best way, but there's something to be said for
the incredible clarity that AmigaBASIC can achieve. I truly hope it lives up
to some of that promise. Don W.

Don, I think we'll see a lot of activity with this basic. After all, Mbasic
is the most common (popular) one around; and with this version being so close
to the same syntaxing as the MAC, I'm sure that there will be a lot of
porting over from the MAC. Once a compiler becomes avail, program execution
will be greatly enhanced. As far as the .bmap files are concerned, that will
have to wait until the info is flowing. Since I've been off here for most of
a week, maybe its already posted…
I checked the DL's but no .bmaps yet unless I overlooked them. I very much
look forward to them, but I do have some things to keep me occupied. I just
received Images/Animator and Gizmoz by UPS, and I have a feeling I am about
to blissfully disappear into another avalanche of documentation,
experimenting and AmigaShock. What I've seen so far is nothing short of
awesome, and I haven't the foggiest what I'm doing yet.
Tearing my thoughts away from my new arrivals isn't easy, but until now I
was attempting to transfer a basic program called MacBanker from a Macintosh
rag to the Amiga. I wanted to use some Intuition .bmap calls in it, although
I may find I'll never be able to use them the way I wanted. When I get back
to it I hope I'll have seen some good basic programming examples to move me a
little further along in my understanding. I'd enjoy throwing some more ideas
at you when I've figured out what I'm trying to do, so I may be talking at
you shortly. Meanwhile–Calendar, Rolodex, Cuckoo, Graphs, Animator,
Images…. which one should I play with first? Don W.
I also just got GIZMOZ and it seems that the Memopad it really quite a nice
simple WP program… except you have to format it yourself Oh well… I only
use it for uploading messages and such so I really like the editing
functions. I managed to crash the announcer my playing with the gadgets while
it was speaking… so that's probably a no. no… Let me know what YOU think
of GIZMOZ.. I kinda like it and think it is well worth the $40.00 is cost me.
