Mike; Actual net is what the mfr. or publisher actually gets for the product. the PC industry has been in such a confused state the last few years, from the retail point of view, that the days of big royalties are gone. for both authors and designers, unless they are proven names. The thing to remember is that for a piece of hardware, the "get it to market" costs can be quite high for the mfr. as it usually makes more sense to make 1000 of something than 100.
