I have recently purchased Autosketch v1.02 (Ser # 80-143477)
Enhanced for use at home while waiting for delivery of our new workstation
and AutoCAD at work. (The registration card is in the mail as of 20 MAR).
The system I have installed it on is an XT-compatible w/ 640Kb main
memory, an EGA Color card (w/ 32K of display memory), a 286Express
accelerator card (80287-8 chip installed), and an Amdek 722 color EGA
monitor. The 'plotter' is an old Epson MX-80, eight years old and getting
pretty tired!
My question regards the statement on page 8 of the manual for
AutoSketch about configuring the display device. "If you have and
Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) with both 256K of display memory and an
Enhanced Graphics Display, choose 3." As stated above, I have only 32k of
display memory, but decided to choose 3 anyway to see what would happen.
As of this time it seems to run fine, but I wonder if I am in for some
nasty surprise when the screen gets full of complex, difficult to
reproduce illustration work. Further, I know that the workstation we have
ordered for work will have 4 Mb of main memory, but the same EGA card that
I have. Will AutoCAD have the same requirment for display memory? Does it
expand into system memory to make up the difference? Or should we be out
looking for additional hardware to make it work?

You must have the memory. I know it will not run otherwise. Actually I am
surprised the EGA has 32k, I thought the lowest it was sold with was 64k.
Regardless –
If you have Color and high resolution, you have the memory somewhere, Sketch
would not work otherwise (less you selected CGA).
What is the make of the EGA card?

Jamie — The EGA card is THE ™ HEGA from PC Network, a little
over a year old. A review of the Documentation shows that the card is
supposed to be capable of two 32K grapghics pages, or 64K of total display
memory, as you suggested. Running Norton SI (v.3.1) reports only 32K of
display memory.
I rechecked the settings and booted up AutoSketch in both CGA and
EGA modes: It seems to work fine in both modes (I recopied it and reset
the parms each time). I don't have any memory enhancements installed at
this time, although I do have a Rampage 2Mb board on order. If the EGA
card is using system memory will that become a problem? Can I redirect it
to the Rampage later?

I don't think it is using the system memory and even if it was, there
shouldn't be a problem as Sketch takes what is available. (512k required)
If you are getting the Color screen for AutoSketch, then you mst have 256k
memory.
