#video 7 vega drivers

FYI I have been having problems with the video seven people supporting the
ADI driver for their VGA card. THEY said that 800 x 600 res. would be
supported with the AUI. Well such is not the case! I down loaded their
driver update files from their BBS and ran their update on the ADI and still
no go. Right now I am using the IBM VGA driver, but I would like to run at
the higher res., use packet inf info processing, etc. CAn you contact me
tomorrow with suggestions. My number is at Sea Quest inc., (619) 438-1101 x

Although we have little control over how they handle their ADI development
and support, I will pass this along to the ADI product Manager to see if
there is something we can do to help.

We are having the same problem with a Video Seven VGA. They have issued a
second version of their ADI 3.1 driver which does support the high
resolution modes but will only show 8 colors instead of 16. We have talked
to customer support and they are unclear as to what the problem is.
Any other experiences with this board?

You might want to read the thread in Section 0 concerning the Video-7
VGA controller. At this time, Video-7 doesn't support 16 color display in
the 800 x 600 mode. The AUI and 800 x 600 is supported, but only with 8
colors.
The rolling that you are getting on your monitor is very likely in the
monitor itself. The monitor "syncs," unlike the controller. The controller
"switches" and locks in on frequencies that are already specified. The
monitor adjusts to those same frequencies. The rolling that you have suggests
that the clockspeeds aren't matching between the monitor and the board, and
the most likely suspect is the monitor.
But hey…don't ask me…I'm just a salesman…<grin>. Lansing Pugh's
another graphics guru here online…you might get his opinion as well.

Check the ROM BIOS version of the VGA card you are using. And check
the software drivers you've been provided. Version 1.0 is still to be
found on the shelves of your dealers and many distributors, although
Video-7 has updated both. I believe the current driver revision is 1.05,
and it *does* support the AUI at 8 x 6.
I too have the same problem. I contacted Video 7 and they sent the new
1.05 rom chips for the VGA card. While it will support 800×600, I only get
8 colors rather than 16. I am very disappointed, as the AUI drivers for
the Vega Deluxe for 2.52 and 2.62 worked very well. I currently have 5
Vega Deluxe and 5 Vega VGA. I purchase the VGA boards because of the
superior way in which Video 7 supported the Vega Deluxe board with rom
upgrades, AUI drivers and finally a software patch to allow VGA emulation.
I currently run all of the Video 7 boards using VGA.
Calls to tech support at Video 7 have resulted in little help on any
encouragement that they will produce a 16 color ADI 3.1 driver. I am
currently out to bid on four more 386's and will be changing video boards to
a different brand. Sorry Video 7, but to little, to late.

Dave, .. I think maybe you are being a little harsh with Video 7. .. To
get a feel for the complexity and memory requirements of the Advanced User
Interface on graphics cards, I suggest you read Melanie Knutsen's "A Device
Driver Primer" in the current issue of CADalyst. (Volume 5, Number 2, Page
33.) .. After reading Melanie's excellent article, I am inclined to
believe that Video 7 probably made a reasonable decision to trade some
colors for resolution. I'm interested in your evaluation of the driver
other than the number of colors, as well. .. Good luck in evaluating your

Thanks Lansing. I probobly needed to be reminded of the complexities. I
guess I was spoiled by the very excellant ADI driver for ADI2 that Video 7
provided with the Vega Deluxe. I will admit, that it was 6 months after I
purchased those Vega Deluxe boards before the ADI2 driver was ready and made
available. That driver was so well done, that I was very surprised with the
loss of 8 colors (that I need) and the window (very useful). I guess I
expected the same level of quality.
I will read the article soon, (I am now going through the new Customizing
AutoCAD by Smith and Gesner, New Riders Publishing, and EXCELLENT RESOURCE on
menus, Lisp, Macros, etc. that should be a must for anyone who is not already
an AutoCAD know-it-all). Great book.
By the by, I have appreciated your personal comments to me, as well as your
articles in Cadence about CIS. If you are going to AutoCAD88, I would like
to meet you and get acquainted. Over lunch perhaps? My treat.

If the bid isn't out already, you might consider Paradise Systems'
new VGA boards. I got my first one in last week, and it's *fabulous*. Just
for kicks, I called their tech support line, and unlike Video-7, I was not
put on hold for 25 minutes and then offered a call-back.

I've got four Paradise VGA boards and love them too. I might add though,
that I purchased five and had to send one back because the Paradise VGA
boards do not work with XENIX yet. XENIX is working on the fix. They
built VGA into the PS/2 version but not the standard version.
