Jim, No, the cards can't go into an A500, it requires the co-processor slot…which the A500 doesn't have. Now, that doesn't mean that someone couldn't come out with some form of expansion device that would add a co-processor slot to the A500….but I suspect it would not be a reasonable alternative. For all intent and purposes, the A500 is very limited as to it's expansion capabilities. It was designed as the 'low end' of the Amiga line, and as such, isn't a versitile as the A2000 as far as expansion, power supply, video capabilities and a few other things. Don

Are they going to "fix" Hi-res mode on A2500? ( Will they get rid of Flickers?) Junichi!

Junichi, There is nothing wrong with hi-res mode…what's wrong is that the monitor has a phosphor that is too fast for interlaced video. A monitor change (which is reported to be comming) takes care of that very nicely. To match NTSC standards (TV video standards), you need interlaced video. It's the interlace (writing every other line every 60th of a second) that causes the apparent flicker. Each line is written only once every 30th of a second…and between writes, it fades. That leaves you with a bright line above and below a darker line (the line above and below being just written lines…the darker line having had a chance to start to fade). When that occurs on a horizontal line between high contrast colors, you get the perception of flicker. Note that it doesn't occur in solid color blocks, nor does it occur on the vertical edges…only on horizontal edges. You can buy long (or medium) persistence monitors right now, but they are a bit expensive (+$1000 for the most part). Don

Oh, I see…So, you mean, There is a flicker just because Commodore2002 or Amiga monitor is cheap. I see. So if I use "real" monitor, I don't have to warry, is that what you meant? I see… What video monitor do you recomend? ummmm…I have a NEC analog monitor for my NEC PC9801VX… I wonder I can hoock it up to AMIGA some how…. -Junichi!

Junichi, NO, it's not because it's a cheap monitor…it's because it's designed for fast graphics and thus needs the short persistance phosphor. The flip side of a long persistence monitor is tha fast moving objects, such as the mouse…will 'smear' or leave a trail across the screen. Read the file MONTOR.TXT in DL 11 for more information. Yes, you should be able to use your NEC monitor with the Amiga. Don

AGAIN, THANKS A LOT FOR THE INFO… JUNICHI!

Don, I assume by your response that the boardwill fit in a 2000? I have a 2000, not 500, must have typed the wrong number. Jim Vogel

Jim, Yes, the boards designed for the A2500 series will fit into an A2000 since the A2500 series is nothing more than an A2000 with the boards in it. The 'base' computer is not different than that you have now. Don

Don, you mean that people that have the A2000 can makeit a A2500 by adding the board(s), and if course will be more expensive ? or by buying an A2500 you will save some $$$. Why CBM did not put the '020 stuff on the motherboard with some hardware that will detect specific '000 code and put a filter for those deadly instructions…anyway… from my seat I see that having a A25000 with the '020 boards is giving you a new big powerful door but you are taking a slot a precious slot…how the memory chips of the A2500 are they relly 32 bit mem chip or just some kind of fix from the A2000… maybe I am talking too much but damn '000 tech is out in order to compete in a clear meaningful manner…RISC chips are spurring everywhere…including in the motorola line ( 88000 ) not many workstation makers will support the '030 except HP to a extend SUN, APOLLO, Silicon Graphics , Prime they are going for the RISC ( risk in a sense ) even IBM ! Bottom line…CBM don't lose your chance to knock a lot of people ou or better to garb a juicer market like the c-64 did…we are waiting and waiting…but not forever…where is that truly based '020 Amiga ?!?!?!? needless to say work on a parallel processed Blitter Amiga based on multiple CPU and ypu will send a lot of companies to their Doctor ( or broke… ) . Well I think that I let ALL of my stress out…after our SUN corrupted a master HD…!!!

Ed, I can't think of a better use for a slot than to add 2 Meg (or 4 Meg) of real 32 bit RAM AND a 68020 AND a 68881 AND a 68551 all at once. If CBM wanted to put the '020 on the motherboard…they would have had to design a new computer and that would have put the A2000 into a bad position for future sales. By making their entry into the '020 business simply a board for the A2000…they have insured the success of both the board and the A2000. The '030 machine is a different story…that will be a whole new machine and rightly so. Don

I hope that they allow for the expansion (Hardware + Software) of the 32 bit address range. 8 megs is great but all to soon its going to feel like a 4K trs-80 did in 1977. There are WONDERFULL things happening in the world of computers! And making everything expandable just makes it happen faster! I am very glad that AMIGA started off so much further ahead than the other machines! Sayiing that the MAC II is (or model 80) ahead is a misteke. The OS for amiga is the begining of a whole new world for computer fans. Its not tied to big bucks or the old old old world of 8008 8080 etc. Gosh I sound like a computer nut! Thanks for letting me sound off.
