Exactly how does a genlock work and what hardware will I need? I own a
Camcorder but It has no jack for Audio/Video in, just A/V out. How much
memory will it also need?
Neil, a Genlock device will allow you to overlay your Amiga graphics on top
of a live signal. Wherever you use color register 0 in your Amiga graphics,
the live image will show through. The genlock unit uses no memory, it is an
independant piece of hardware. You will be able to use your camcorder to
supply the live video, but you will need something to tape the resulting
signal.

Would I simply need a VCR connected to the amiga in order to tape the
finished product? I dont want to get a genlock and find out I need 100's of
dollars more worth of equipment.
Also, out of the numerous genlocks on the market, in your opinion what
is the best compared to its price?
Neil, you will need something to supply the Genlock with a Live signal, and
something to record the Genlocked signal. One of them MUST be a recording
device such as a VCR. If you have 2 VCR's, great! If you have a VCR and a
Video Camera, that works also.
The best Genlock for the money……thats purely subjective. The SuperGen
from Digital Creations is about $800 and is fantastic, and not an
unreasonable price if you are doing serious work. The AmiGen from Mimetics
at $180 is also sai to be good, but nowhere as good as the SUperGen.
Nevertheless, for $180 it is a steal….especially for home use.
