Help! Memory & AT BB
1 messages in this thread
Thomas,
Thanks for your extremely quick response to my message. I've been on the
phone with Intel all day Thursday and the techs really feel there should be
some address setting that the board should work at. Well a little time has
passed since I wrote the first two sentences and here's the scoop.
I talked to a second tech at Intel and we started checking where addresses
of other boards were at. Turns out they have had problems with the Orchid
Pro Designer Plus VGA card in the past and it was in their database. Guess
what kind of VGA card I have! Anyway the tech was great, he said all was
looking fine except for the Expanded Memory not working and he was sure it
was the Orchid.
After that phone call I powered down and pulled the Orchid card out and
then started back up. The Above Board configured just fine! What a
frustration that is, especially since I ordered it mail order, no one in
town stocks that kind of stuff. I'll have to get a refund or maybe the
place, Swan Technoloy, will offer to trade my Orchid board for something
that works with the Above Board.
I have some questions about the AST Rampage 2 for you. Is it an 8 or 16
bit board or can it be either one like the Intel board claimed. Does the
AST board have a serial port on it? What is the maximum amount of RAM on
it, 2 Meg as I think it is? Can you run with a combination of Extended and
Expanded memory at the same time? I need to have a system total of 800K of
Extended Memory so I'd need 512K of the AST board's memory then I'd want
the remainder to be Expanded Memory so Word for Windows would be happier.
Lots of questions there, any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
I've had a lot of headaches trying to get this PC side to working at a
reasonable pace so I can do real work on it.
