What I mean is, the drives connected to the WordSync supply the SCSI IDs.
The card itself is not a device, just a controller. My 296N is set to
device 0, and my external 4070 is set to device 2, and there are no
conflicts with the card.
All devices on a SCSI bus (except perhaps that 'single initiator bus
mentioned by Craig from ICD) have to have a SCSI ID. It's part of the
spec. Else it couldn't "grab" the bus for a request…since it couldn't
identify itself to the other devices on the bus. However, there's nothing
in the spec that says the Host Adapter (which is what the WordSync is) has
to have it's ID user selectable. It can easily be permanently set at any
ID number the manufacturer prefers, probably 7.
I do like the fact that you keep using "host adapter" instead of
"controller". Maybe if we do it enough everyone will change? 😉
Heh heh.. I try to use the terms properly, but I fear it's a losing battle
at times. I remember very well how disappointed I was when IBM's mainframe
disk subsystems started using the term 'controller' to refer to something
other than 'the thing that attcahed to the channel', and started using it
to refer to 'the thing that connected the drives to the channel adapter'.
