I have worked in LA before, I worked at Modern Videofilm for 2 years. I
got laid off and went back to working in accounting to pay bills. I was
trying to get back in somewhere outside of LA, cause I didn't like the lack
of comitment to employees. Also less stress, amybe doing commercials or
industrials, or dubbing.
If you or anyone else hears of something, let me know.

Speaking of MVF, I used to work there from '82 – '84. Tried to get back
in last summer, but I could never get a hold of the guy who does the
hiring, and of course, he would never return my phone calls. Oh well. There
is one other option, you might try NBC for the Barcelona gig. Just about
everybody at Pacific Video has sent in a resume'. You might also try Encore
Video, I understand they are moving to larger quarters, as well as MVF. I
figure, that if anybody is moving to a larger bldg., that they will
probably want some add'l help. Good Luck!

Modern has had some pretty heavy lay-offs, and the rumor (I emphasize it's
only hearsay) that they're not doing very well right now. I suspect that's
the only reason why they didn't call you back on the job app–there were no
jobs to fill. –MFW
Funny you should mention that. When I sent in my resume', rumors were
flying that they were desperate for people. Just goes to show you…..
We're incredibly slow right now ourselves. It's damned scary. I don't think
things are going so well for us because of the stupid merger we had a ways
back. We've lost several good people as a direct result of it. I may be one
of them, but for now, I'm just going to sit tight and thank my lucky stars
that I still have a good paying job.

Some LA employers do give their workers a big commitment, but it depends on
the circumstances. They've been extremely good to us at Complete over the
years, and the layoffs there have been very few and far between. (And as
far as I know, neither telecine ops nor video editors have ever been laid
off due to lack of business.)
There's lots of freelance work in town if you know where to look for it.
I'd also talk to all the smaller boutique places, like Anderson Video, VSC,
Sunset Post, Vidfilm, and so on, in addition to the big places like AME,
Modern, Complete and so on. If you're willing to work graveyard, do dubs,
and so on, the jobs exist if you can just work out the timing. –MFW
Where do you work? Do they have openings? I need an in. Most places
won't talk to you if you don't know someone. That's how I got in a Mod Vid
as a Vault guy long ago. I just don't want to have to start back at the
bottom again. I can do dubs, don't even mind grave, I worked grave for a
year in the vault, then again as a QC op.
Do you know of any places that do dubs in Orange County? I'd like the
commute alot better.

No, I know nobody in Orange County. I'm over at Complete in Hollywood, and
unfortunately, we're all full up at the moment. If anything, business is a
little slack at the moment, but I expect it to pick up in a couple of
weeks.
Times be tough all over. All you can do, I think, is just to make a lot of
phone calls, be as enthusiastic and energetic as you can, and be prepared
to bust your butt and work hard. The jobs are out there, if you're willing
to look hard enough. –MFW
