Yes, you were right. I went for the hardcard when the omti + 33 proved to
be unreliable for autobooting. The omti would return 'ready' before the
drive was, and cold autobooting never worked. Warm boots were usually ok.
I also got occassional read/write errors that I could never totally
eliminate. The seagate may be slow to get ready, but is very well behaved
so far otherwise.
The 2090a had problems because of the way it handled dma; this was supposed
to be both a hardware and a software problem. Khalid released a newer
driver that is said to reduce the trouble, but not eliminate it. The 2091
is supposed to be much better behaved. At any rate, the Kronos is NOT dma
(no matter what you think of dma) and cannot have this issue. It does use
up cpu time, though. It is also fast. Theoretically, a faster cpu will
cause it to run faster. I'm also told that on a very fast drive the Kronos
will be very fast. One way or another I'm quite satisfied with my Kronos
based hard card.

I fooled around with it tonight and, for the moment, it seems to be
behaving. I pulled out the board, installed the ram card and screwed it
down. Then I tugged a little at the front and back of the chassis. I
cleaned the Kronos connecter with a rubber ink eraser. I put the card back
and tried to putting on the cover. No autoboot. I reinserted the card and
made absolutely sure it was seated securely and put the cover on. Now it is
running. I've tried several cold boots, and so far no problems. But as you
say, even when it was running at it's best before the troubles, autoboot
from a cold start was a touch and go thing. I will see what happens during
the next few days.
One thing I notice is that Whap doesn't like the Kronos very much. I
pick up an awful lot of glitches when I'm taking messages off CIS. With the
new version of Whap, almost every other forum misses some messages and I'm
instructed to go to a text editor to see them all. Yesterday one of the
message files had such a big error, the machine crashes when it gets to
that message. I tried downloading a file the other day and finally had to
send to it RAD: because the Kronos kept freezing up the machine. That would
happen before too. I remember it took me weeks to get Whap! 1.7 down, and
then I had to download it to ram to get it all.
However, I sure love the speed.

My Kronos does not have any problems with Whap, but the Omti and Okidata
33meg Rll drive had non-stop problems with Whap. As to the screws holding
the boards in place, mine stripped after a while, which I was luckily able
to fix using some washers. I'm convinced that the Seagate 157n, a true
scsi drive, is a much better drive in this context.
