My choice for erasable optical are mechanisms marketed by Pinnacle
Micro. Usually they're SONY based. Prices vary from roughly $2K for 128M
3.5" to $4-5K for 650M (325 per side) 5.25" media.

Thanks for the info Kevin… I think my desire to have a Frame-by-Frame
optical disk recorder (Sony LRV?) and removable mass media are beginning to
merge into one product! Wow, imagine how much $ I'll save <g>…

Your idea, if I understand it, is to buy a combination optical animation
recorder/player and optical data disk (and both eraseable would be just
fine). Even though I follow this area, I think, I am not aware of such a
drive. Or can the Sony that has been mentioned here (by Gary) be used in
that dual role? I had not thought it could be so used. But I will be
happy to be corrected on this point.
What is this mythical product? I know of no such thing, at least not
available retail. The LVR5000 uses analog recording not digital so no
possibility of data storage. I suppose you could store images on it and
then capture them back onto disk when needed but since it's not digital you
may experience some generation loss. Somebody out there must be working on
a digital laser disk recorder.
I think I'm going to have to <GRIN> a little wider next time… There is
no optical product that I can use as both mass storage AND Frame-by-frame
recorder…not that I know of anyway… It does seem like we're being
pulled in that direction though, doesn't it…
So, what I have to do is buy a Re-writable Optical DisK Drive for mass
storage / re-movable media….and….buy a Frame-by-frame Laser DisC
recorder as my Master Deck for finished animation work…. If only I could
1) render my frames in digital form, 2) find the mythical company that
markets the mythical-every-purpose-optical-laser-based-perfecto-drive, and
3) gather enough money to afford it…..

I second Kevin's opinion… The Sony-based 5.25" MOD drives work very well,
although they are slower than you are used to in a large drive (about
200k/sec transfer is normal) but they sure make up for it in capacity! By
the way, if you just need raw SPACE, Stacker works just FINE with the Sony
MODs, and gives you 512 MEGABYTES PER SIDE, on a removable disk that costs
about $100.
C'mon, guys, I dare ya…. show me random-access storage at $100 per
Gigabyte, anywhere else!
