I recieved a brochure from Epson Accessories yesterday offering factory
reconditioned printers at really cheap prices. One that interested me is
called 'ActionLaser'. Brochure states it's a 6 ppm laser printer with 6
resident fonts, is compatible with 'popular' cartridge and softfonts and
comes with 512 K of memory.
Does anyone out there use this particular printer? And if so, would you
mind answering some questions?…
* Does this printer emulate a Hewlett-Packard? And how well?
* What brand of cartridges will it use? Epson proprietary? HP? Other?
* How often does the Toner/Drum charger need to be replaced? And do they
have
to be Epson proprietary or will others do as well?
* What are your overall impressions?
My thanks to any and all who may help me out in making a decision to buy
this affordably priced laser printer.

I have done a bit of research on the ActionLaserII (which may or may not be
the same unit as you are talking about)…a small bit. However, I can
probably answer some of your questions, or make some reasonable educated
guesses. Remember, however, that I am talking about the ActionLaserII, a
current model…
First of all, catch the article in the April PC World…the
ActionLaserII is the editor's choice. It takes HP carts, has a postscript
option (tho not yet available); it is relatively speedy, and was judged to
have the best output.
The memory on the new model can be boosted to 6 megs, using standard
SIMMS (once you have the expansion card…:)). Overall, it looks like a
pretty decent printer. Add in Auto-port switching if you have a second
machine.
Now…the reason why I go into this at length, even though we may be
talking about two different printers, is that…the best street price I
have seen on the ActionLaserII is only $619!! At this price, it is a much
better deal than that the Oki 400, which can be had for as much as $50
cheaper.
So…how much is Epson asking for the printer you are talking about? Is
it, possibly, an ActionLaserII? Or, is it an older model? I would go for
it if it were considerably cheaper…like, at least $200 cheaper than the
best street price on the ActionLaserII.
Let me know what the price is, and if the brochure offer is open to
anyone.

Thanks for your input on the Epson/ActionLaser. I can tell you know that
this particular model is _NOT_ one that I really want.
I believe the model that Epson is selling refurbished (with a same-as-new
warrantee) is the original ActionLaser. Has less features than the current
ActionLaser II.
The price is attractive, 500.00 + shipping. There is no mention of to whom
this offer is restricted, but I believe that since I've ordered from the
Accessory Department before, I get first dibs. Maybe.
I went to a local printer store, and they happened to have one of these
around. It seemed to work just fine. My problem with it is the laser
engine. It isn't the same as that of the HP LaserJet, and the saleman said
they have problems getting toner and drum/chargers.
I think I'll just save some more pennies and spring for a HP LJ IIP.

I would rethink the ActionLaserII decision…just for some background, we
have a lot of Sharp engined machines around here…and yes, getting the
toner is more of a challenge than for Canon engines (like the HP's).
However, since it uses separate parts for the consumables (toner,
developer, drum) you are more likely to get better economy this way. I
would believe that what holds true for an engine such as the Sharp would
likely hold true for the Epson. I suggest pricing the toner from a large
mailorder house before making this decision.
When my pennies are saved, I'm going for the Epson. My understanding is
that they're selling like hotcakes.

Note that you'll have to expand the memory in this printer to print
full-page graphics. 512K won't do it–I think you need 1.5MB.
How much are they offering this for?
